Survive

After spending a few days in the land of the dragons, he managed to learn a lot of things.

First of all, not only dragons lived in dragonhold. There were Skyweavers, resembling a mix between elves and extremely large birds, and Stonewrights, a dwarven-like stocky race responsible for their construction and maintenance.

Secondly, as the dragons were a race secluded from the rest of the continent, he had expected that they would be more united since they had a common goal and enemy. But their internal conflict alone was enough to consume them before any war would have the chance to. Weirdly, he's heard that somehow, the absence of a dragonlord is what resulted in all these. Just how he's supposed to deal with their internal conflicts, he had no idea.

And lastly, Raya hated him. No, he didn't know why, she just has some sort of prejudice against him. He's tried talking to her about it, but every time he asks her, she just snorts and moves her head to the side.

Whatever, he'll just leave it. He was only trying to be nice because of the hospitality he's received anyway.

On this particular day however, there was not much to do. He had been staying cooped up in the house he was giving, consuming books he found in the house. It seems they were 'relics' left behind by previous dragonlords. The information ranged from knowledge about Skyrim to history of the dragons and experiences of previous dragonlords. It was more helpful than he had anticipated.

He placed both his legs on an elevated stool, reclining and reading a book on magic utilization when he heard a heavy 'swoosh' or wind outside the building.

He closed the book and stored it back on the bookshelf before heading out.

Outside the building, Raya and the dragonking was standing right outside his door along with a couple of elder dragons accompanying them.

He froze mid-step as the corner of his lips twitched. The dragonking seemed to have a queer smile, but his daughter on the other hand...

"Don't be alarmed, dragonlord. I'd just like to have a word with you." The dragonking took a few steps backwards and smiled to show that he really meant no harm.

Raya on the other hand just stood there, with her chin raised high—her chin was always high to him anyway, it didn't matter how high she raised it.

"So, what brings you all here?" Lucian asked, scanning their faces. The rest of them remained neutral, like escorts for the king.

"We've been deliberating on how to better prepare you for the role you've just assumed. And we've decided to send you to one of the colleges of magic." Nithe said before briefly glancing back.

One of the elder dragons stepped forward, "We were able to secure a participation slot in the College of Winterhold's annual examinations. If you're able to pass the examination, you will be admitted into the best school of destruction magic on the continent. But before we pass on this chance, we want you to prove yourself worthy of the opportunity."

"There have been hushed whispers around the kingdom that the dragonlord has arrived but he is weak and will eventually be our doom. And some part of the council has already written you off as a... waste."

"So, how do you want me to prove my strength then?" Lucian said through gritted teeth, veins popping on his head. He didn't risk his life coming all the way just to get dissed as a waste of space.

"You are to have a spar with Princess Raya. She is the strongest dragon of her generation and possesses the unique 'icy flame'. Besting her in a duel will immediately clear all doubts."

Lucian looked up and could see her already gazing at him, her eyes curved in mockery.

'Icy flame? I haven't heard of that before. Her scales are blue though.'

"I accept the challenge."
