In 2019, John read that all people are affected in some way by mental illness. John was hospitalized for a month in 2008. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2009. In March 2020, he considered himself completely sane for the first time as an adult. Now he is able to function in the world. He is now a self-employed gardener, as well as a self published writer.

Sigmund Freud once said that psychoanalysis was essentially a cure through love. John looks inside and sees a bright light that shines. This was once a damaged, derelict space that God made well before taking his dwelling within. John's father always said that the Eucharist was his food. John is helped in some way every time he approaches the Eucharistic feast. Catholics believe in Transubstantiation, and that the consecrated bread and wine become the body and blood of Jesus Christ. To John, the body is a source of strength and the blood redeems him from venial sins.
