Severed Fate

A heroic villainess, Corlissa Veronique is an anomaly herself, such a paradox is the best description of her existence. A pitiful soul forever chained to the bindings of the Villainess, she was a bug in the system, a glitch in society, a defect in the world. Memories of past lives, her own life played on repeat, that was the curse of the Villainess. Emotions never left her, she felt the suffocation of betrayal time and time again, the burning of hate, the drowning of despair, the delightful yet excruciating taste of love. Each time they turned their backs to her she felt the same emotions each and every time. It was as if she was just a marionette, obeying commands against her will as if her free-flowing string of fate that connected to her 'happily ever after' was trapped tightly in the grip of other people's hands, stretching and fraying it however they wished. She vowed to, without fail, fulfil the wishes of the previous villainess who had left the world with unmistakable anguish...and sympathy. Such empathy... "You are a person, no matter what you look like or what you do, unless you prove me otherwise I will continue to view you as who you are." Such compassion... "I wish you didn't have to suffer, I wish you could've been born into a better world." Such understanding... "Let me handle the rest, take a comfortable rest." Such selflessness... "I won't let you suffer anymore..." She truly was such an exemplary hero. --- The cover art is not mine, I found it on Google. ^^

Within the multiple barriers that Corlissa had formed, she began moving randomly, not a care in the world about any possible injuries she could sustain. The swords made of light began raining down in every direction except this time, the blades did not disintegrate. The swords broke down into various light beams after they had reached the surface of the slightly moving water barrier, some fragments of the blades did escape through the barrier but the dark magic barrier was there to prevent them from reaching Corlissa.

The various light beams that the swords broke down into were deflected from the first water barrier, the other one residing outside the boundary of the attack was used to direct the rebounded rays of light into the sky where another film of water was. This created a sort of torchlight, converting the attacks into light then directing it all upwards into the sky, the result being a spectacular rainbow spectacle and a completely nulled high-level attack.

“Isn’t my creation amazing?” questioned Corlissa with slight mockery, “though I did have to be more extravagant than usual since the First Prince is watching so you have my apologies for that,” she added.

Evie let rage take the reins of her facial expression and made it quite evident that she was discontent with how her attack was being looked down upon.

“I did promise to beat you with water magic, didn’t I?” Corlissa asked no one in particular before continuing, “I suppose I have to fulfil that now, by the way, my mana is still fairly abundant.”

Instead of charging at Evie and defeating her with her physical ability, she chose to battle using spells, more specifically, spells that would normally need incantations to activate but Corlissa was far from the norm. Incantations for spells are normally used when the spell being cast is extremely difficult and would need the aid of phrases to tap into the depths of one’s mana.

Corlissa summoned another blade in her hand and raised it parallel to the ground, after a momentary pause, a towering dragon made of water extended from the blade, charging at Evie.

“I quite enjoy the cultures of the East after all so I made this in homage to the shape of a dragon,” Corlissa commented before letting out a contented sigh and continuing, “magic is such a great power don’t you agree, I’m grateful that I am blessed with such power.”

Everyone deadpanned at her unnecessary comment, ‘why is she using her powers for THAT reason?! Are all prodigies like this? Also, HOW WAS SHE ABLE TO CAST AN A-RANK SPELL WITHOUT A WORD, HONESTLY, PEOPLE SCARE ME SOMETIMES!’ was the common thought running through their heads alongside pure disbelief, even the Headmistress watching using magic also shared such thoughts.

The water dragon created by Corlissa was still in the air connected to the blade that she was holding, when Corlissa dropped her blade to the floor, confusion to stir within everyone, the dragon began attacking Evie. When it was close to reaching Evie, she raised her hand to form a barrier of blinding light which reached high temperatures and evaporated the water dragon.

“Awww, how sad. It went down pitifully, all my hard work,” Corlissa said with visibly fake tears causing the audience to be rendered in shock again, ‘Do I even have anything to teach this child?’ Sir Illinbur thought with a sigh. Although the majority were questioning what ‘hard work’ had gone into it since Corlissa effortlessly cast it.

“I suppose I have to use the lessons that Sir Tristan taught me, I was hoping to keep it hidden so I could sleep through lessons though...how disappointing…” Corlissa boldly announced with a downcast expression, the Headmistress making a mental note to give the child more difficult work since she had boldly stated her intentions.

Evie was still in a state of panic, fright, disbelief, rage and utter fear, she had now regretted her subconscious choice to have underestimated Corlissa. The young Veronique dashed at her opponent, leaving only a blur in her trail. When she was at point-blank range for attacks the ash pink-haired girl raised her hand shooting out pellets made of light at high speeds. Despite the attack itself being shot at the speed of light, the time it took for her to comprehend where her opponent was and aim the attack lagged behind the speed of her royal blue-haired opponent.

If any of Evie’s attacks were remotely near Corlissa, a slash of water would be seen despite the person responsible for it disappearing before a proper glimpse could be seen.

Ironically, the Blessed Child with the power of light was left attacking in the dark, blindly wasting her mana in hopes of inflicting some damage onto her opponent as she spontaneously sent out attacks in waves depending on the afterimage that Corlissa would leave.

“How sad, you didn’t even get a single hit in. It seems I win again, Miss Luxiere,” Corlissa stated with her blade at Evie’s neck and a frown resting on her face before it morphed into her usual neutral one as she released Evie from her state of vulnerability.

“Even if you have light magic, it doesn’t cover nor make up for your shortcomings, this is the difference between someone blindly charging to the top and someone who works from the base,” Corlissa subtly whispered to Evie.

“The winner is Corlissa,” announced Teacher Illinbur who had finally seen an interesting match but had also refrained from commenting that Corlissa didn’t use her strongest magic. “Remaining members of Class 3-S and Class 1-S, proceed to the grounds for your next battle,” the teacher continued.

After seeing how only 3 people were left to fight in Class 1-S, the teacher contemplated before deciding to have Corlissa take on all 3 of them by herself to make it fairer. Amy Vontaine of Class 1-S had admiration and ambition lit within her after watching Corlissa fight as her attribute was also water.

“I kinda forgot about this but every first-year Class S always has little people, to make it fairer, all of Class 1-S, including Evie if you want to, will battle against another first year,” Illinbur stated with a blank face. “You can begin now,” he finished as the rest of Class 3-S left the grounds.

Evie had joined her class as support despite having a less than desirable amount of mana left after her fight with Corlissa.

“Just to be nice, I will only use 3 of my attributes, the fourth one would give me too easy of a win,” Corlissa provoked.

A cocky auburn-haired boy was riled up by her childish provocation and responded to it out of anger, “What?! Don’t underestimate us just because you bumped up a few classes!” he yelled.

Hearing his reply, Corlissa glanced at him briefly, perhaps scanning him before sighing regretfully, “Nothing about you stands out to me though.”

“Tch. I’ll make you take that back!”

The boy charged at the young Veronique, covered in a layer of light surrounding him, supposedly acting as both a shield and a buff. In his hand was a sword, lavishly decorated with jewels and a gold hilt, pitifully it was not a full-length sword. Perhaps due to his age, he had yet to develop the necessary muscles to handle even a half-sized sword, his extravagant blade was hinting towards him being a spoiled child of a high-ranking noble but he did not have the skills befitting of his status.

The true person that Corlissa was watching was still staying still, eagerly analysing the movements of both her allies and opponent. Amy Vontaine, the only student other than Evie that she acknowledges to have the capabilities to uphold the standard of Class S, the hard work that she had put into the art of battling with swords was evident to the eyes of Corlissa.

The auburn-haired boy sprinted until he was right in front of Corlissa, he raised his blade and began attacking almost recklessly but the light that was surrounding him sent out strikes of light in accordance to the direction of his swing. This caught Corlissa by surprise as she gained another cut on her arm, blocking things at the speed of light is quite difficult, that much is to be expected. Another spontaneous attack from the boy that was easily avoided but the attack of light slightly singed part of her clothes.

‘I might actually be in a pinch this time, this hurdle is simple yet quite an abnormality to overcome,’ Corlissa thought.
