Set Fire to Rain

In the shadow of tragedy, Meredith's world crumbled like a fragile sandcastle, swept away by the merciless waves of fate. With her mother's demise echoing in her soul, a sinister revelation emerged – her father had gambled away their fortune, leaving behind a staggering debt that clawed at the edges of her existence. As if scripted by the cruel hand of destiny, Meredith's father fled, abandoning her to face the financial tempest alone. The burden of survival rested heavily on her young shoulders, and the weight threatened to shatter her resolve. But amid the debris of despair, an unexpected lifeline emerged, weaving an enigmatic twist into the narrative of her upheaval. Paris, the city of love and lights, became the backdrop for Meredith's metamorphosis. Yet, the glamour of the French capital remained elusive as her modest budget clashed with the city's extravagant reality. Shelter, a basic human need, became a luxury she could ill afford. Then, like a subtle melody in the cacophony of her turmoil, Matthew entered the stage. A peculiar proposition danced in the air – he offered her a room in his apartment. However, fate, in its mischievous playfulness, cast Matthew as a central figure in a drama laced with bitterness. Matthew, the ex-flame of her closest confidante Maria, was the embodiment of a past Meredith despised. The lingering embers of their tumultuous history sparked a tension that crackled beneath the surface. Would Meredith swallow her pride, her disdain for Maria's ex-lover, and accept the refuge offered by this unexpected ally? Or, would she face the unforgiving streets of Paris, choosing solitude over the discomfort of cohabiting with her nemesis? As Meredith contemplates this paradoxical predicament, a curious metaphor unfolds – fire and water forced into a reluctant alliance within the confines of a shared space. The sparks of their clashing personalities promise a spectacle, a sizzling fusion of passion and cool detachment. In the heart of Paris, where love and defiance dance hand in hand, Meredith and Matthew find themselves bound by circumstance, fanning the flames of an unlikely companionship. Yet, beneath the surface of this unconventional arrangement lies the question that lingers like an unspoken secret – can Meredith, the fiery protagonist scarred by her past, find solace and redemption in the proximity of her watery counterpart? The streets of Paris hold the answers, echoing with the footsteps of a young woman navigating the intricate alleys of loss, pride, and the unforeseen chemistry that ignites when opposites collide.

Unwanted visit

Eddie was driving at speed on the highway as Matthew tried to keep up with him. Eddie was lost and angered, he stepped on the gas and drove faster when he spotted Matthew's car behind him blowing horns at him.

Matthew was unable to catch up with him, he tried to make him stop but he didn't stop, Matthew finally got the chance to move in front of him making him pull over almost immediately before crashing into him.

Matthew angrily walks over to Eddie forcing him to come out of the car, "Are you crazy! why are you driving like a mad person? what happened did the old man say anything to you?" Matthew asked all at once as Eddie steps of his car running his hands through her hair.

"Why are you in such a bad mood?" he asked again. Eddie wishes he could tell him the reason why he was angry but he chose to keep it to himself.

"Nothing," he said in reply.

"Nothing? You just chose to go on a speed race on the highway?" Matthew asked in disbelief looking at his friend who had never hidden anything from him before, he felt bad Eddie was keeping secrets from him.

"Yes, I just felt like driving fast, is that a problem?" he voiced in his defence.

"No man, I was just worried about you," Matthew said putting his hands on his shoulders.

"You don't have to be okay," he said angrily as he yanks his hands off, Just then two cars crashed into each other right ahead of them.

BOOM!

Their face dropped as they witnessed the accident, the car exploded almost immediately because there was a gas tank parked ahead at the side, Matthew and Eddie stared at each other in horror, who knows if Matthew didn't stop Eddie in time, with the way he was driving speed he could have been the one to crash into the gas car.

"Wow! shit! That was close," Eddie said as they call the ambulance, they doubt anyone could have made it because the car exploded almost immediately. They went closer but couldn't go closer enough with the hope of rescuing any possible survivor.

They couldn't wipe the horror off their faces, the police arrived not long after to handle the situation. Eddie and Matthew walk back to their cars.

"This is sad, they both just lost their lives just like that..." Matthew said as Eddie's phone rang, Matthew nodded as Eddie walked aside to pick up the call, it was her mother.

"Eddie, come home tomorrow afternoon for lunch and bring some flowers Purple and her family are also coming over. Listen, Eddie, this time around don't you dare disappoint me," his mum said over the phone.

"Can you people stop it already, I don't want to have anything to do with that girl. why do you keep insisting as if she's the only girl in this whole world mum? I'm not coming so don't expect me? Now bye!" he said angrily and ended the call. He angrily smashes the phone on the floor.

"I can't believe they're still up with this?" Eddie mumbled hitting his leg on the car tire.

"It is hard but you need to calm down, do you want to go to the club?" Matthew proposed.

"No, I just want to go to the apartment and rest it's been a long day," he said as he sat in his car and drove off.

Matthew watched him leave before he entered his car and drove back to the apartment.

Meredith arrived at the apartment very tired, she went straight to bed without putting on the light in the apartment when Matthew arrived he thought Meredith still hadn't arrived yet so he left the door open. He sat in the dark living room waiting for Meredith, When he heard some footsteps he mistook them for Meredith.

"Why are you now back? you left way before me," Matthew said without raising his head.

Matthew thought Meredith was ignoring him, and as usual, he gets up swiftly to his surprise it was his father Mr. Fernando at his doorstep.

"Were you expecting another one of your sluts?" his voice echoed in Matthew's ears as he stares at him with so much anger in his eyes.

"That's none of your business! what are you doing here?" Matthew said coldly.

"Is that how you talk to your father? won't you even ask me to come in?" Mr. Fernando said walking inside the apartment as his eyes scan around the room.

"You're going to come in anyway, just tell me what you want and leave," Matthew responded.

"Son,"

"Don't call me, your son, the last time we spoke I think we made it clear to each other..." Matthew roars as a voice cuts him short.

"Why don't you apologize to your son? That is why we came here," a voice whispered through the dark but he can tell the owner of that voice regardless.

"Grandma," Matthew's eyes light up when he saw his grandmother walk through the door.

"When did you get back grandma?" Matthew whispers as he runs over to hug her, "That's my boy," she mutters cupping his face in her palm, Matthew helps her as she sits on the couch lighting the room up.

"When did you get back? I would have loved to be the one to pick you up from the airport," he asked holding her hands.

"Just coming from the airport, I wanted to surprise you but I was told you move out of the house, my lion, your relationship with your father can't keep on like this. Father and son can't keep fighting like strangers," Grandma Fernando complained looking at both her son and grandson.

Grandma Fernando is the mother of Fernando, Matthew's father. Matthew has been very close to her since childhood, not even her mother would understand him the way his grandmother does so he loves him very much and sometimes calls her MoMA.

Grandma Fernando has made it obvious to everyone in the family that he is the grandson he loves the most, he is his favorite among all his grandchildren.

"Come here son," Grandma Fernando said as he waves at his son to come closer, Mr. Fernando takes a seat beside his son.

"Matthew just go back home with him so that your father and you can sort this out like the family that you are, I don't have much time left to keep settling all your arguments," his grandmother said looking at both of them as if they were kids being scolded.

"Grandma come on, you know I don't like it when you talk like that besides there is nothing to sort out between the two of us, he has made himself clear and I've made myself clear. There's no way I'm going to compromise, this is my life grandma, I love what I do, so why can't he just accept that? I just can't be another photocopy of him," Matthew complains.
