Set Fire to Rain

In the shadow of tragedy, Meredith's world crumbled like a fragile sandcastle, swept away by the merciless waves of fate. With her mother's demise echoing in her soul, a sinister revelation emerged – her father had gambled away their fortune, leaving behind a staggering debt that clawed at the edges of her existence. As if scripted by the cruel hand of destiny, Meredith's father fled, abandoning her to face the financial tempest alone. The burden of survival rested heavily on her young shoulders, and the weight threatened to shatter her resolve. But amid the debris of despair, an unexpected lifeline emerged, weaving an enigmatic twist into the narrative of her upheaval. Paris, the city of love and lights, became the backdrop for Meredith's metamorphosis. Yet, the glamour of the French capital remained elusive as her modest budget clashed with the city's extravagant reality. Shelter, a basic human need, became a luxury she could ill afford. Then, like a subtle melody in the cacophony of her turmoil, Matthew entered the stage. A peculiar proposition danced in the air – he offered her a room in his apartment. However, fate, in its mischievous playfulness, cast Matthew as a central figure in a drama laced with bitterness. Matthew, the ex-flame of her closest confidante Maria, was the embodiment of a past Meredith despised. The lingering embers of their tumultuous history sparked a tension that crackled beneath the surface. Would Meredith swallow her pride, her disdain for Maria's ex-lover, and accept the refuge offered by this unexpected ally? Or, would she face the unforgiving streets of Paris, choosing solitude over the discomfort of cohabiting with her nemesis? As Meredith contemplates this paradoxical predicament, a curious metaphor unfolds – fire and water forced into a reluctant alliance within the confines of a shared space. The sparks of their clashing personalities promise a spectacle, a sizzling fusion of passion and cool detachment. In the heart of Paris, where love and defiance dance hand in hand, Meredith and Matthew find themselves bound by circumstance, fanning the flames of an unlikely companionship. Yet, beneath the surface of this unconventional arrangement lies the question that lingers like an unspoken secret – can Meredith, the fiery protagonist scarred by her past, find solace and redemption in the proximity of her watery counterpart? The streets of Paris hold the answers, echoing with the footsteps of a young woman navigating the intricate alleys of loss, pride, and the unforeseen chemistry that ignites when opposites collide.

One night stand and nothing more

"Come on Meredith, don't start with this again, I admit Matthew isn't a saint but we all know that and Maria also knew that, she just didn't listen to us. Stop torturing yourself, She's my best friend too and I loved her so much, I didn't want her to end up the way she did but we all know she had a problem," Pamela whizzed.

"Hmm yeah, but still it doesn't get rid of the guilt," Meredith hissed.

"We've tried to help her as much as we could," Pamela said.

"I know that but still I should have been there for her?" Meredith expressed.

"There was nothing you could have done Meredith, it was her choice and besides you were going through a lot yourself back then don't feel guilty about that. I was the one with her, even I couldn't stop her," Pamela mumbled trying to console Meredith the death of Maria had taken a toll on them.

"I know, I know I shouldn't feel this way but I can't help it, Alright I'm getting late. I need to get to work and with this news, everyone is going to be waiting for my arrival, I still have a lot to do after yesterday's event," Meredith mumbled picking up her handbag, and her door was slightly open.

"I know girlfriend I'm happy for you I on the other hand still can't find a job," Pamela rumbles feeling jealous of her friend.

"Seriously," Meredith sounded surprised.

"Yes I have tried every job out there but no one is ready to pick me," she replied sadly.

"Don't worry you soon get a job okay, You can't lose hope but in case you need anything..." Meredith offered she knew how badly Pamela needed a job.

"Come on Meredith, don't say that I can handle this and besides you need more money than I do, Tell me how is it that you are living in the same room with that honk without falling in love with him?" Pamela teased she was referring to Matthew, Meredith smiled and quickly wiped the smile off her face when she realized she was smiling.

"Seriously Pamela will you stop," Meredith chirped.

"I was just kidding but you can't deny it the guy is handsome and super hot like a movie star," Pamela said slyly.

"Yes, and a playboy too, apparently my best friend was a victim of him," Meredith chitted.

"Yes I know, there you go again. We all feel sorry for what happened to Maria, I loved her you know she was like a sister I never had, I pray she rests in peace and maybe she's finally happy where she is," Pamela said sadly.

"I wish the same too, you know I miss her," Before Meredith started crying over the phone she said her goodbyes to Pamela.

"Okay girl, I'll get in touch soon, I need to go, kisses I love you,"

"I love you too girl, Have a lovely day," Pamela replied before the phone went dead.

Matthew forgot his cell phone so he came back for it, Unfortunately, he overheard everything Meredith and Pamela talked about, he was confused but he starting to get the reason why Meredith loathed him so much.

'Does that mean that her friend is dead,' Matthew thought as he bashed the door open.

His eyes lock with Meredith's who jumps in fright when she sees him standing in front of her door. "What are you doing here? When did you come?" Meredith manages to say.

"If you are worried I heard everything, then yes I did, what happened to your friend Maria?" Matthew questioned as if he had the right to.

"What do you care what happened to her? Have you ever been concerned with all your lovers and what happened to them after you broke their hearts," Meredith spouted.

"You are testing my patience,"

"I'm late for work excuse me," Meredith said angrily, she picked up her bag and pushed him out of her way.

Matthew forcefully grabs her hand from behind and lugs her back, he pins her on the wall, Meredith struggles to get away from his grasp but he is too strong for her, the anger in his eyes is intense.

"Let go of me, you are hurting me," Meredith mutters under her heavy breath, More so she didn't like the fact that he was so close to her, having unusual feelings, she felt her heart was about to explode.

"I'm talking to you, You are not going to ignore me, I asked what happened to her. How did she die?" Matthew growls as he still holds Meredith's arm firmly staring at her with piercing eyes ignoring all her plead.

Meredith couldn't explain why her heart was beating fast, She was supposed to feel angry for him being aggressive with her, for being so close but she kind of liked his body pinned to hers, and she could feel his breath, her body like it and wanted to stay there longer and enjoy the heat rush it sends to her inner core making her body crave for him the more but her mind hated herself for feeling that way.

Meredith rolled her eyes when she realized Matthew was distracted and lost in her eyes. She managed to push him away with all her might now away from his grips. She strengthened her dress and picked up her handbag that dropped on the floor, "How she dies is none of your business, so stay the hell out of my way," Meredith angrily snapped walking into the living room.

"No Meredith I'm not going to let this drop like that, I asked you a question and you're going to answer me What happened to Maria?" Matthew busted out angrily smashing the jar on the table as Meredith jumped in hysteria.

"Okay," Meredith consented, taking steps towards him confidently, "you want to know what happened to her? She killed herself because she couldn't stand being used and dumped like a piece of shit," Meredith said standing right next to Matthew and raising her eyebrow, Matthew felt as if a storm just hit him hard.

"Now you know, she killed herself because of you," Meredith grumbles. "No No No, you are not going to blame me for that," Matthew stuttered.

"NO?"

Meredith asked folding her arms and waiting for the justification Matthew was about to give paying keen attention, She tilted her head raising an eyebrow. Matthew felt cornered and didn't know what to say looking at Meredith's face,

"Excuse me to say, but that friend of yours is crazy, and that got nothing to do with me," Matthew defended himself as Meredith chuckled she didn't expect anything less from him.

"I'm sorry for what happened to her but you're not going to blame me for it, I didn't do anything, I didn't promise her a lifetime together, she exactly knew what she was getting into. I never promised her marriage or anything or a serious relationship," Matthew said as Meredith frowned, she didn't know why was even arguing with him when she already knew he was going to say that.

"Beleive it or not it was a one-night stand, she was aware of it, and she wanted it as much as I did so why would you blame me if I didn't want to continue with it," He mumbles trying not to be affected by his latest discovery.
