The Basics

After the administrator left, the apprentices all went to their respective teachers. Ray still couldn't see who his teacher was, as he had a black mask on. So did the rest of the teachers. He looked around him and saw he had 5 other apprentices with him, and he was the only level 2 apprentice.

"We'll be going now, I'll teleport you to my area. Every official mage is given their own spot within Mythri school." He explained. "Right now you are insignificant apprentice mages. You might be important in a small town with mortals in it, but the second you step into the real world of mages. You are nothing but an ant."

"My name is Magnus Harlow, and you will all be under my command for a long time. I'll teach you the basics if you don't know them already, then you will do what I tell you to do. If you disobey me, you can already imagine what will happen."

Nobody said a word of complaint. In their eyes, it was already their luck that they could enter the school. Doing what their teacher said couldn't be that hard, right?

He snapped his fingers and the 6 apprentices were teleported into a dark room. There was nothing in the room except a small window which let in a sliver of light. Just enough to barely make out the surroundings. "To start, in terms of spell types there are 3 major categories. Attack, support, and defense. Of course it is much more complicated than that, but that's all you need to know. In terms of your raw battle power, there are two major things. Your body, and your soul. Your soul is much more complex than your body, and is what most people focus on. However it is important to not neglect training your body, as it is what houses your soul. Without a strong body, your soul won't be able to properly channel energy, or in very bad cases the massive amounts of energy will destroy the body. You do need a proper body training technique to improve your bodily strength though, don't do something stupid and try to do it by yourself."

"Although you are all under my power, you will naturally receive benefits if you follow my bidding. I will impart to you all a basic defensive skill, a basic support skill, and a basic attack skill. It's not required for me to give you this, but I'm doing so anyway. Think of this as an example of what will happen if you follow what I say."

"An apprentice mage has a lifespan of 200 years, which is more than enough time for all of you to reach the official magus level because of your talent. Atleast most of you should be able too. What you should be worried about isn't time, but your survival. You might have grown comfortably your whole life inside your noble house. But to become someone strong, and to achieve power, it will be a very dangerous road.

"Now leave. I designated a room for all of you. Every apprentice will get a small cabin in my area. I'll give you all a cabin number and a password. I will come here in exactly 1 year to give you another lesson, I expect you all to have made some accomplishments in that time. As for you, Ray. Wait behind, I need to give you your payment."

Ray saw the rest of the apprentices with a jealous look on their face, although they didn't let out a peal Infront of Magnus. In the future they probably wouldn't have the best of relationships, but why would that matter to Ray? After Magnus gave everyone their cabin information, he turned to Ray and pulled out a small black container.

"This is a soul box, it is used for storing souls for later use. Inside of this there is an eighth of a soul, specifically the soul of a level 6 beast."

"Why is this soul so important?" Ray asked.

"With the right techniques, it is a training resource. You don't have to worry about that, you can use it to buy a skill from the school's store. Actually I wouldn't recommend using the energy stored inside the soul to train even if you could because of your talent. You don't need it. However, don't get too cocky about your talent, it won't matter anymore once you reach the official magus level."

"Now I'll be gone, I have business to attend to." Magnus said without any more explanation. He disappeared to who knows where, leaving Ray alone in the dark room.

Ray left through the door he saw the other apprentices go through, and let the bright sunlight soak into his skin. However the moment was quickly ruined by the other 5 apprentices approaching him.

"What did he give you?" One of the boys stepped forward and asked in a threatening tone. He appeared to have already stepped into the position of being a leader. Ray clearly remembered him, and it made sense he led the group. His name was Zach, and he was the mage who had the spell fireball. Although he was still only level 1, his spell easily melted anyone who he came across.

"An eighth of a soul, I'm sure you already heard this when the teachers were choosing students." Ray replied.

The boy snorted and said, "I know that, but he gave you something else right? Since you're his favorite?"

Ray could only wish he gave him something else, but he truly had nothing left on him!

"He gave me nothing else." Ray insisted.

The leader of the boys didn't persist after seeing how persistent Ray was. He didn't want to go too far until he knew the rules and structure of Mythri.

"I'll let you go for now, but don't think this is over." He said in an intimidating tone.

Ray knew that he was just trying to intimidate him, and see if he could take anything for himself. He wouldn't actually try to do anything so soon. If he was that dumb, he would have died long ago.

Ray left the scene not wanting to be further involved with the other apprentices. 'I knew they would dislike me for having better talent than them, but I didn't think it would be this extreme.' He thought. 'That Zach must have coerced them into going against me, he's definitely going to be a thorn in the back in the future. I won't make any moves for now, since right now is the most important time to play it safe and raise your strength, but I will probably have to deal with him in the future.'

With that, he stopped thinking about Zach and headed to his cabin.
