☄️ Asteria ☄️

I'm staring at the television silently with Mami Joyce, watching the video call that's being captured from Charity's* phone.

*Another friend of Joyce and there are other people not mentioned yet, Jean, Sheena and Faila; Asteria and Cyrus during College. But the five of them have no idea about Cyrus and Asteria's relationship even though they're friends.

...!

It took me by surprise when saw him on his tuxedo and looked shining brightly as ever on the day of his wedding.

He looked like the best groom ever.

"The Bride and the Groom are making their entrance."

I saw the two of them walking down the aisle.

"Wow~ they look so good together." Faila said happily.

"Yeah..." I murmured while staring blankly at the screen.

He glanced at Charity's phone and for a second there, I thought I made eye contact with him.

But he immediately removed his gaze from the phone and looked straight on ahead.

"... They look really good together." I finished.

I heard a lot of cheers from the audience and their happy applause accompanied by my friends' cheers inside the small hospital room.

Because they look so good together...

It made me wonder for a second if there will be a place for me.

*clap*

We...

He inserted the ring into his finger.

Where am I heading to?

I was lost in thought for a moment when I saw the two of them smiling at each other lovingly.

"Cyrus Lopez, are you willing to be with the bride for the rest of your life?" I heard the priest ask.

He secretly gazed at the phone which made me flinch once more and made me long and hope that he might cancel the wedding and rebuild our lost relationship after 8 years.

"Mr. Cyrus Lopez?"

"..."

But this is reality.

I'm not in a movie...

... And even if we are, I'm just a side character that's ready to be disposed of by the author any moment.

There was a momentary pause before Cyrus spoke.

"Yes, I do." he answered firmly.

I silently looked down at my pale hands as my tears started dripping down my face.

"Huh?"

*drip*

I couldn't hold it in...

"Hm? What's wrong?" I beard the ever soft and comforting voice of Mami Joyce.

Sheena started shaking me softly as she held my shoulders but I didn't speak.

"Eh?! Are you crying?" I heard Jean's worried and panicked voice.

"Hey, why are you crying?! Don't cry~" Mami Joyce said in an attempt to comfort me.

*sob*

"If Cyrus is getting married, I will also cr..." Faila tried wooing me but stopped midway.

She had this look of terror on her face. She looked really funny honestly she never change.

"That's not right, I wouldn't cry, why would I cry?" she asked herself out loud.

Their attention went back to the tv to watch the wedding but I continued to watch silently as if nothing happened.

*sob*

He looked at Charity's phome again but I continued sobbing silently and murmured, "Cy..."

We met in junior high. We became friends and study partners. We were really close.

Until that day...

...I had to leave and transfer schools because I'm already in so much pain but I never hated you for what you and your friends did to me.

We met again in college...

...We kissed.

We encountered a lot of problems... But we always solved every one of them.

Even though we weren't perfect.. It was ok...

Because we loved each other...

So tell me...

"Smile for the newly weds!" I heard the emcee say from the blaring volume of the television set.

What did I do wrong?

I silently and slowly closed my eyes...

And with that I drew my last breath.

I saw Asteria again half a year ago.

Cy, after work come pick up mom at

Sheena's clothing store on SM Mindpro.

I looked out of the window of my car and saw the familiar figure outside the Silver Oak University waving someone goodbye.

A college teacher, waving goodbye to her students.

*VROOOM*

*SCREEECH*

*BRAKE*

I hit the brakes of my car by the side of the road and tried to sneak another glimpse of the said teacher.

It's Asteria...

She's even more beautiful now.

She's waving goodbye to a lot of students who are parting different ways.

It reminded me of our old days together.

After that, from time to time I would go look for her inside the campus.

Well... Actually, many times.

I didn't dare approach her, for fear of losing control and rushing towards her and holding her into my arms.

I was afraid that after seeing me he would treat me like a stranger.

I was afraid that he would still hate me. Especially on the day that I found someone new and got engaged.

"It's all in the past." she repeated firmly.

"Uhm." I tried, but failed again.

"Everything is alright now." she tried reassuring me. But I still feel like sh*t.

She forgave me easily.

I know this is her last generosity.

I want to stay with her again, even if it's just for a little while.

But I don't dare say it, and I know she only sees me as a friend.

" Dr. Lopez, aren't you busy?" she formally asked me while lying down the bed.

"Ah?" I picked the small apple apple sizes with a toothpick then looked at her.

"I'm feeling alright now," liar, why are you talking to me like you're happy but your eyes are dead and cold? What happened to you after all this time?

"no need to stay with me all the time, there are still many patients waiting for you." she continued.

Are you trying to push me away?

"Oh, I'm not busy." I insisted.

As a doctor, I remained by her side until the last day.

Ending the autumn, giving an early welcome to the winter...

Asteria is gone.

But she died during my wedding day.

I tried convincing myself for a long time, that I should accept the fact that you are already gone.

I kept on getting drunk on her tombstone every day.

But it seems that God isn't ready to let me escape.

I always see you.

It seems you came back to my side in a different way.

Until today...

... I realized.

I hesitated.

She gave me what was most precious to me, but I didn't cherish it.

It took her so much time and effort to get my love but I destroyed it so easily.

I disappointed her.

I can still imagine the look on her face when it was announced that I'm already engaged.

"I mustn't believe you." she kept on crying, "you did not cherish me."

"You destroyed our past and future." she might have even screamed on top of her lungs. "You disappointed me."

With her eyes looking down on me coldly.

I wanted to stop and cancel the wedding and go to you right away.

But I couldn't.

I'm sorry.

I'm a coward.
