“I’m not that drugged. And when I look at you, all I’m going to see is the man I fell in love with about two seconds after I met him.” Jesse slid his hand to the back of Gideon’s neck and pulled him forward, closing the final inch between them so their foreheads were touching. “Assuming Marcus was telling me the truth, I know….well, I know a lot of things you probably didn’t want me to know. But it’s not your fault Marcus was…insane.”

“It was. It’s my fault Mary’s dead.”

“After she died, you both had a choice to make. Marcus chose to trade his soul for the chance to hurt everybody the way he’d been hurt. You did the brave thing. You chose to try to make the world better.”

“Brave.” The breath it took to form the single word fanned over Jesse’s cheeks, but at least Gideon didn’t pull away. “Yeah, I’m so brave, I couldn’t even tell you about Mary. And that’s the only reason you went to Marcus. Because I wasn’t giving you what you wanted.”
