What hurt the most was…Gideon knew Mary wouldn’t even blame him for what had happened to Brooker. She’d find some way to shift it away from him. Because that was the kind of woman she’d been.
He remained still as Marcus advanced again.
“You don’t want this fight. You’re going to lose.”
“No. I’m not. Because you can’t hurt me, Gideon. And you can’t beat me. I can feel it, you know. How hurt you are when I say her name. Mary, Mary, Mary. And that just makes me a little bit stronger. And honestly, I’ve been gorgingmyself for the past four days.”
Marcus kept walking as he spoke, until he was within striking distance. Gideon didn’t realize his intention to strike until his fist connected with Gideon’s face with enough force to send him flying back to the wall.
