“He’ll come,” Jesse whispered.

“Uh, yeah. I just told you he would be. Oh, but not because he’s on his way to rescue you. I’ve seen to it he’ll receive an invitation he can’t refuse.” He paused, studying Jesse’s face, but Jesse kept his expression blank. “I thought that would cheer you up. Don’t you want to see him one more time?”

Jesse couldn’t even guess at what Marcus thought he was playing at. And he didn’t even care, either. Regardless of what he was trying to do, it would all end the same way. 20

The vampire’s screams wore at her nerves until she felt raw and jumpy. And the dungeon was supposed to be soundproof. That’s what Jesse had told her their first day in the penthouse. The screaming wasn’t only loud, it was constant. She wanted to stake the vampire herself, but Gideon hadn’t said anything about staking his captive, so she resolved to ignore it.
