“What did she do when you balked?”
Gideon snorted. “What did Ido, you mean. I lied and told her, ‘Sure, not a problem,’ and then went ahead and hunted anyway. I thought it was stupid to pretend I wasn’t a vampire, or that I didn’t need to hunt to survive. And Mary never knew the difference. Not even at the end.”
Guilt radiated from him like heat. It was in the way his shoulders slumped, and the way he kept his eyes on the floor, and the disgust in his voice. For the first time, Emma really understood what Gideon was protecting them from. The depth of his own self-loathing. She wrapped herself around his arm, resting her head on his shoulder, trying to give him as much of her warmth as she could.
