Chapter 64

A single door marked entry into the building. There wasn’t a security pad on this one, but the steel lock meant Gideon had to force his way inside, hesitating in the entry to listen for the peal of far-off alarms. When they didn’t come, he slipped into the darkness, pulling the door shut behind him.

Brooker’s office was on the thirtieth floor. But when Gideon reached the landing in the stairwell, he found himself face to face with another of the electronic keypads, the red light blinking to denote its activation.

“Damn it!” Gideon growled. Without thought, his fist shot out and punched the wall, his knuckles raging in protest when the hard cement only gave slightly around his fingers. He could break his way in, but that would alert security, and he wouldn’t have time to look around. The other floors weren’t protected in the same way, which meant he could always go there and take the elevator to thirty, but he was sure any unexpected usage would spark the same kind of attention.
