Padding out into the living room, he was halfway to the bedroom door when he realized the penthouse wasn’t deserted as he’d thought. Two distinct heartbeats came from behind the door.
Gideon glanced at the clock on the DVD player.
One-eleven.
The party should be in full swing. But Jesse and Emma weren’t there. They were here.
His gaze swung back to the door. Jesse hadn’t gone.
Those final footsteps to the bedroom were much slower than the first half. Cocking his head, Gideon listened to the low murmur of voices for several seconds, debating what he should do. He couldn’t apologize without explaining why. He couldn’t continue the fighting, either.
But he couldn’t do anything at all standing on the wrong side of the door.
