Chapter seventy four Pretend

Janice opens her eyes and was about to stretch but stop as her eyes widened with fear at the two thick muscled Indian men sitting in her room. She looks around and notices that her nurse wasn't there. Mrs. Melissa and Ty's aunt had left earlier with faith but her nurse was supposed to be there, where was she.

Panic grips her and she tries not to draw their attention. Who were these men? She knew most of Ty's cousins but she had never seen these men before, what were they doing in her room, and where the hell was her nurse? They had probably scared the poor woman out the door.

She decides to pretend that she was still sleeping when one of them looks over at her. "Hey, look who's awake." He said with a broad smile. "Hi there, oh come on, don't look so scared, we were here on Friday remember?" The other one said laughing. 'You were, I don't remember you' Janice thought to herself.

Oh, how she wished her husband or nurse would walk through the door right now. "I'm Connor and this is my older brother Cameron. Are you feeling alright? Is there anything we can do for you?" Connor asks stepping closer to the bed. 'Yes, you can leave, so that I can go to the bathroom.' She thought moving away from him and shaking her head no.

"Um sorry, we didn't mean to make you uncomfortable, we just wanted to say goodbye and to give you these gifts we bought for you, we were thinking that you could use them while you're in here," Cameron explain handing her a gift bag. "Tha-Thank you," She stutters taking the bag from him.

"So-Um takes care of yourself, we'll be praying for you and your son," Cameron adds. 'Great, now she had hurt their feelings by treating them like longhorn bulls.' Mustering up all the courage she could find she took a deep breath and calls them back. "Wait," She said looking into the bag and taking out the first gift, then opening it and for a minute she couldn't figure out what it was.

"What is this?" She asks. "Well, it's a Coby MP3 video player," Connor said not moving. "Could you um please show me how to use it?" She whispers. "Sure, Cameron said coming closer and taking the device from her. "Um, may I sit?" He asks cautiously.

"Okay," She said moving over only to end up next to Connor who was now sitting on the other side of the bed with a device similar to the one they gave her. "Alright it has a touch screen, you turn it on by pushing this button," Cameron explains as Connor demonstrates.

They were in the process of explaining how to use the device when Tyler entered the room and just the thought of his cousin being that close to her made his hair stand up on the back of his neck.

Janice breathes a sigh of relief at the sight of him. "Hi, guys, what are you doing here?" Ty asks with a hint of jealously. "Hey T, we stop by to say goodbye to the newest member of our family," Connor explains. "Goodbye?" Ty asks. "Yeah, we've to get back home, we've work tomorrow," Connor adds. "What are those?" Ty asks. "Our gifts to her," Cameron said leaning closer to Janice as she attempts to activate the device.

"Time to go, bro," Connor said looking at his watch. "Alright, well you guys take care, we'll see you at the cookout," Cameron said as they left. A few minutes later Ty sat beside her and realize she was trembling."

"Are you alright?" He asks softly. "It's just that when I woke up my nurse was gone and they were here, I think I might have hurt their feelings by treating them like they had a disease or something and then I tried to make it up to them and I really need to go to the bathroom but didn't want one of them to offer their assistance." She said softly. "I know they are members of your family but---." "What do you mean the nurse was gone? Where is she?" He demands. "I don't know. She wasn't here when I woke up." She said still trembling.

"Okay—it's okay I'm here now." He was helping her to the bathroom when the nurse came in. He assists Janice into the bathroom and came back out pulling the door up behind him. "Where the hell have you been?" He demands angrily.

"Your cousins told me to take a break." She said nervously. "Alright listen to me." He said running his hands through his hair in frustration. "The next time someone tells you to take a break, you call me first alright." "Okay sir- I'm sorry, it won't happen again, did something happen while I was gone?" She asks in a panic. "My wife isn't very comfortable around strangers alright, just do as I say and everything will be fine." "Yes, sir---Um should I leave and give you some privacy?" She asks. "Yes please, actually you can take the rest of the day off." He said annoyed.
