Searching (The Last of Us FF)

David, a member of a special forces unit that was sent to Mexico to investigate a mold targeting crops. To David it didn’t seem like the kind of thing he would be assigned to such a mission, but here he was following around scientists and keeping them safe. Not long after all hell begins to break loose, and doing something he never thought he’d do in his whole life he abandoned his post and made his way to the border to get back into the US. He saw what this “mold” was, the scientists told him as such. It was a fungal infection that turned people to into mindless beasts. Now David will make the journey back to Austin Texas and hopefully find his family. David is the middle brother of 3 brothers, his older brother is named Joel and the younger brother is Tommy. He grew distant with his brothers once he joined the military, getting told often that he had changed and become cold. But family is family, especially during an apocalypse. Alright this story is going to start off with just David traveling trying to find his family, tracking down Joel and Tommy. Then going into the events of the games. Not sure how long the travels solo will last, but we’ll see. May throw in some POVs of Joel and Tommy with them talking about David, idk yet. Not even sure how well I’ll stick to this fic as this is mainly a spurt of inspiration after listening to an audio book called Apocalypse Z by Manel Loureiro. Just finished book 2 and it made me want to do a zombie book of my own, and I just so happened to get the small pieces for this fic from it. Hope you enjoy. Chapters will probably only be uploaded on Wednesday and Thursday as those are my days off.

Intro

[September 25th, 2013] One day before "Outbreak Day"

It was a normal day, me and my unit had been called into this location just outside of Mexico City, Mexico, a week before. My unit was… nonexistent in official contexts. I'm sure that other governments knew of our existence enough to fear us, they same way that they have their own groups like us that the US fears. Checks and balances.

Either way they may of known our unit, but obviously they didn't know the exact members. We wouldn't be very good at our job if they did after all. This job however was different than most of our usual jobs. Our usual missions consisted of search and rescues, assassinations, retrieval of information, or extraction of information(torture). Basically we were the team that got sent in when things were hairy, about to get hairy or well and truly fucked.

This mission was to guard a group of high up scientists from the CDC to look into this new "mold" that had been spreading on local crops. It had begun in the lower parts of South America and had been making its way up through Central America. Of course it became our concern when it reached Mexico and seemed like it wouldn't be stopping at the border for its immigration check up.

I'm a killer and a damn good one, but regardless of what those scientists think, we aren't all complete idiots. I know 10 languages from Spanish to Chinese and studied a variety of things before I decided I wanted to do black ops work. So when I overheard them talking about a fungal infection that took over the brain and controlled insects and small mammals I knew we weren't dealing with anything ordinary.

I cursed myself and my superiors for not letting us bring phones that I could call my family with, we only had these radios and a com linked to a computer to contact command.

"Miller!" I heard one of the doctors yell and I turned to see one of them fighting off a dog that was attacking another. With a fluid motion my silenced M27 AR raised up to my shoulder and the laser found the skull of the dog as it shook about. With a muffled shot the commotion ended as the dog laid dead on the ground while the doctor clutched his arm.

They quickly carted him into a tent and began treating him while running tests on the dog. The blood work came back for both revealing the cordyceps infection was now inside the doctor. I was getting that familiar feeling in my stomach, the one that always appeared when a situation goes from shit show to truly fucked.

I listened from the outside as the doctors scrambled to isolate the infection and study it in its early stages. They would leave the doctor under examination for the foreseeable future to see how he reacted to the infections.

The night came and went with the doctor's health declining, he was now running a fever and claimed to have a migraine. Though no matter how many pain killers they pumped into him he still writhed on the bed in pain. That feeling in my stomach was growing and I already had a few guess what was happening, but even for me it was too unreal to contemplate.

The fungus was now starting to transmit to humans and it was happening right before my eyes. I was thankful beyond words for the gas mask they had issued us for this assignment. This fungus from what I understand doesn't only pass through bites, but through the air via spores. It slowly took over the brain before turning the infected into mindless beasts.

It's Joel's birthday… Also the official "Outbreak Day". When that doctor started attacking the other doctors I dropped him. The others were shocked that I killed him, but after they opened up his head and found the fungus beginning to cover his brain they realized finally what was happening. I however was doing something I never imagined I would do since I joined the military. I was abandoning my post.

I knew what would come next, this wasn't something that we were equipped to handle. And when the people no longer feel safe, anarchy follows close behind. I had a family to reach, my wife was home with our dog. Haley was your typical southern belle I suppose you could say.

Grew up on a farm, left a trail destruction in her wake and wouldn't be told what to do. She was tall with long brown hair and bright green eyes. Once again I cursed myself because our home wasn't in Austin near Joel and Tommy, no we lived in a small Mississippi town where she had grown up. She knew everyone in that town, but I couldn't trust them to keep her safe until I got there.

Hell I couldn't really trust Joel either, but at least I'd know he would do his best to keep her safe. And then there was Bella our blue heeler that worked as a cattle dog on our farm.

My mind was made up long before i stole this truck off the side of a Mexican store front. I wasn't too worried about breaking the law with what was about to happen. It would be a full days drive from here to southern Mississippi, as even with my extensive skill set I didn't know how to fly a plane or a helicopter.

Also I was going to need to make a detour, a detour into Austin fucking Texas. To see if I couldn't pull my brothers out of there and my niece Sarah. We may have grown a part since I joined the military 7 years ago, but I wasn't going to leave my last bit of blood to fend for themselves in this mess if I could help it. 19 hour drive here I come.

Hold on Joel, Sarah, and Tommy, I'm coming for you all and then I'm taking you all to live on my farm. We'll survive this coming shitshow somehow.

Author's Note

Just a quick opening chapter to get things kicked off. Gonna have a description of David Miller in the next chapter, and it should be a bit longer of a chapter. Just wanted to get this started since this idea has been in my head for a while now.

Hope you enjoy.
