Chapter 60

My back slammed into the nearest rock as I ducked my head down, mere bullets from the opposite side grazing only inches from my head as I paled, randomly shooting in the direction of the enemy before plowing into the ground again. Screams from both my members and the enemy rang out almost ear-deafening as my eyes gaped towards Chia who was clutching her left arm in pain across from me.

Shit, she got shot.

I gritted my teeth before hearing a small clatter of an object beside me as my eyes darted to the timer bomb.

Boom!

I shrieked before crouching myself into a little ball, only to feel the weight of a body smash onto my back as wind approached like a wrecking ball, thrusting me forwards as I plummeted onto the ground on my face. A yank came from the front before I staggered up to see Chia and a bunch of my other members stand in front of me, holding a bulletproof shield before yelling for me to take cover. I shoved myself into the trees before another ear-piercing noise almost ended up crippling my eardrums.

Swinging my arm forwards, I rapidly started to fire from the side, aiming at what seemed to be a couple of bodies of the enemy before yelling out my 'thanks' over the crowd of my men. They laughed dryly at my excellent manners before another bomb hit them as they scurried off in different directions, a couple of people injured at whimpering on the ground.

This was bad.

I licked my dry lips before yelling out orders for the closest people to save the ones alive while the other groups would cover for them. Assaulting the corner group, I dashed out and acted as bait to lure the fires towards me as I rolled onto the ground, shooting people in the heads as blood splayed from all sides. I was really not suited for close combat.

I can't die here.

Light's face flashed into my mind as I winced from a single bullet grazing me in the arm.

I can't die here.

My body jolted towards a tree before another bullet shot through my right leg as I coughed out blood. My mouth was burning as well as the numbing pain that was beginning to show signs of resurfacing with the piercing pain. The smell of my own sweat filled my nostrils as my head started to react by spinning 180 degrees.

I can't die here.

I still had my members.

I still had my friends.

I still needed to see Light-

I screeched as another bullet entered my sides my body fell limp onto the ground as I breathed heavily.

"I got her!"

Cheers came from the opposite side as my members screamed for assistance to the first aid unit.

"Don't…" I heaved before lifting myself up with my remaining energy only to collapse back on my arms.

Light...I'm sorry.

"Don't stop attacking!" I screamed with tears. "Kill them! Don't worry about me!"

Chia's voice rang out to echo my words as I felt a surge of protests coming from all my members before bombs rang out with the shouts from the opposition.

Light, I'm so sorry for taking advantage of you.

I hiccuped before closing my eyes, as the faces of people flashed through my head.

Soichiro Yagami and Sachiko Yagami.

I'm so sorry I used you to get closer to my goal even though you treated me decently. I'm so sorry you had to die while knowing that your daughter was the one who ordered your deaths. I'm so sorry that we couldn't become a proper and happy family.

I'm so sorry that I treated you like that before your death, dad.

Isame…

My breath trembled out as I gave a heartless laugh.

I've never really apologized for your death. I've only thanked you for what you've done to save me. I was selfish, I know. I didn't trust you enough, I know. I'm sorry your life had to end because of me. I'm sorry I forced you into the mafia group and took away your education.

I'm selfish.

I'm sorry.

Miyara, I hope you're happy after being released.

Tsubame-

I haven't heard your snarky reply to my gift for you yet.

I laughed before closing my eyes.

Was this how it was going to end?

Maybe this was for the best.

Light... probably never needed me.

I closed my eyes, not feeling tired just yet, only trying to hold in the silent screams from my wounds.

No.

I don't think it's my time to die yet.

I still had so many things I had to do.

I wanted to become rich. I wanted to live with luxury and have everyone underneath me.

No, I was not tired yet. I cannot fall here.

I whimpered before cracking my eyes open to see all my members fighting desperately for a chance to reach me.

Not yet. I repeated.

I cannot fall here. I repeated.

I gritted my teeth before pushing myself up on my elbows, my wobbly arms almost had me shocked before I huffed in another breath, moving my other leg. My right leg was bleeding profusely into the ground, the trails of blood just pouring out into a small puddle as I heard my name in the sky.

Sure, I was getting lightheaded from the blood loss, but-

"Alyona!"

The male's voice shouted from above, forcing my eyes to squint from the afternoon sun as the build of a lean yet similar height boy jumped from the ladder, landing swiftly on his feet before he swept me off my feet and yelled for first aid. His jet black hair shone desperately in the sun as I felt him carry me with his sturdy arms.

"Anthony…?" I mumbled before losing the feeling in my legs. "...Are you the reinforcements?"

"No," he shook his head as sweat started to roll down his forehead before ducking down and avoiding enemy fire. "I rushed here the moment I heard that your base was attacked."

"Oh…" I trailed off before closing my eyes, the side of my stomach really hurting badly as I coughed again, the red liquid passing through my lips like vomited iron. Anthony's eyes widened exceptionally.

"Stay with me, Alyona," he panted before jerking his head up, dashing with me in his arms. In the corner of my eyes, I saw Chia follow him with her pained face as she urged desperately for the other members to continue firing with Anthony's crew.

"Medic!" He hollered as a couple of people who I've never seen before rush towards me, working all over my body as two injected something into my bloodstream as I jerked up.

"Alyona, I'm here with you," Anthony grappled my fingers tightly before kissing them with a desperate shine in his eyes. I smiled softly back at him before turning to Chia who was also being bandaged lightly compared to me.

"...How many people did you bring?" I croaked out as my consciousness sharpened at my question. Anthony looked at me with a wary grin before murmuring that I was a workaholic under his breath.

"Around 5000, another 300 is coming in about 20 minutes."

I nodded before sighing into his embrace as his crew worked hard to bandage my leg and stomach. I snapped open my eyes.

"It's not enough," I rasped.

"What?"

My eyes flickered to the people who were shielding us in a circle to aid me.

"They've brought 20,000 in total, even with Henrik's reinforcements, that's still not enough," I pushed myself up but Anthony forced me down.

"Exactly what are you trying to do?!" He shouted before toning it down after seeing my unwavering eyes.

"Chia, go to the car and bring the Death Note," I commanded as Chia nodded instantly, dashing out of the circle as Anthony turned to me with questioning eyes. His mouth opened and clamped shut after thinking for a moment, turning his head to see the overall situation before something clicked in his head.

"Anthony, please buy time," I pleaded before being Chia dodge a couple of bullets before successfully trampling into the forest where we had hidden our car. Anthony grasped my hand tighter before his sharp jawline tilted downwards, nodding slightly.

"I will explain after," I promised him before trying to lift myself off the ground, only to fail as Anthony caught me within his arms.

"Tell me where to go," he gruffed out before lifting me with his body as I pointed to my base. Chia came bolting down from the forest with a black book in hand as she saw my gesture, nodding as she ran towards the entrance of my base.

Anthony did the same, throwing me on his back before making a sprint for it. Once we reached the entrance, Chia was already pressing the button for the elevator. Anthony didn't question, only helped me into the elevator, pausing as I told him to place me down.

I could tell that he wanted to accompany me into the lower grounds just to make sure I made it without any falls, but I told him that his men needed him. Nodding once, Anthony kissed my fingers like how he did when we first danced at the party and left.

"Chia, take the pill out of my left pocket," I ordered before leaning on the wall of the elevator, clutching my side as I winced. She did instantly, pulling out the broken pieces of the drug from my pockets before understanding my actions.

The elevator beeped on the floor of the interrogation room as Chia slung my arm around her neck, pulling me into the room as some of my members gasped at my bloodied form before rushing towards me. I held my hand up and ordered them to prepare a glass of water and dissolve the pill with it.

They did immediately, coming back with the glass as I ordered Chia to bring me into the room that Mello was currently unconscious in.

"Make him drink it," I wheezed as Chia poured the drink down Mello's throat after throwing away the gag that was in his mouth. Mello stirred a bit before drinking it obediently, thinking that it was normal water after being dehydrated for three entire days.

I watched him swallow each bit of liquid before sitting down on the floor, panting from how much stress I had put in my injured leg from just standing up. Mello groaned before closing his eyes sleepily, drifting above his consciousness and under like a floating ship.

Chia let him go as I told her to stand by the wall and finish bandaging her arm. I then turned my full attention to the boy, watching his head bob up and down before studying his current state. His arms and fingers were bandaged properly and seemed like he could be thrown for another mild session of interrogation.

But that was not what I was going to do now. Originally, I had planned to use the drug if his interrogation did not go well, but I was interrupted by the ambush. Sweat rolled down my neck as I inhaled a deep breath before forcing on my sweetest smile.

"Mello," I called gently. "Do you remember mommy?"

His misty eyes blinked back then closed back again, a soft smile appearing on his lips as his head flopped down.

"Do you remember mommy, Mello?" I asked again before tilting my head, this time earning a drunk nod from his giggling face.

"Hehehe," he grinned toothlessly before flopping his head backwards. "Mommy…"

"That's right," I nodded like an adult trying to console a child. "It's mommy."

"I'm so sorry I left you in the orphanage," my voice came out soft and sad before Mello shook his head slowly.

"Mello knows mommy didn't abandon him…" he drowned out, raising his head with an innocent smile that contrasted so much from his usual aggressive personality. "It was those men who took mommy away…"

His speech was much clearer when he was trying to speak in a lower tone. Aside from the blubbering, I could clearly hear what he was trying to say.

I lifted my eyebrows at this new information. I had predicted that orphans had a soft spot for family love, but someone had taken Mello from his mom? Was this even said in the anime or his backstory?

"But mommy…" he whined before lifting his head and squinting his gaze at my face. "Didn't they...kill you?"

My mouth fell before immediately plastering on a smile.

"No, Mello, they lied to you."

"But...I saw them kill...you…" he twisted his face before small tears started to plop down from his face. "They killed you…"

"They were just acting, Mello," I pressed harder. "Mommy is alive and well, but I can't seem to remember your real name."

Glancing at Chia who was staring with a gaping face at the back, I wrote in the air, signalling her to get a pencil. She nodded mutely before sneaking outside and returning just a couple of minutes later before scribbling what I usually told her to write on the Death Note.

"Mommy doesn't...remember?" Mello pouted before flopping his head with a foolish grin.

"Mommy was told that your name was changed to Mello, they kept on repeating Mello, Mello, Mello, it was terrible." I made up a lousy excuse.

"Mommy only... needs to know Mello…" he mumbled as my eye twitched.

"Mello, this is important," I said gently and made sure to add a bit of order into my tone. "They said that if I could remember your name, they would let me go."

Before he could reply, I balled myself into a ball and shivered.

"It's cold, my son. I'm scared!" I reached out with a trembling arm, fear actually flashing through my face as I acted.

"The bad guys have taken me hostage and locked me up in a cold and dark place," forcibly sniffing, I pretended to wipe my tears before falling onto my knees and tried reaching out for him.

"Mello, save mommy!" I pleaded with desperation. "Mommy is in pain, mommy is hurting!"

Mello's face instantly darkened with rage before crying out.

"Mommy! Where are you?! How dare they! How dare they?!"

"Mommy is here, my son," I flopped my arm down before scrunching my face in feeble confusion. "But why…? Why do you seem to leave me?"

"Mommy!"

"Did you abandon mommy, Mello?" I whimpered with hurt in my voice. "Do you want to see mommy killed?"

Mello thrashed around with his legs while his eyes fluttered open and closed with mist.

"Mommy! Mommy- Mello-Mello didn't abandon you!"

"Then all I need is your name!" I screamed out before hugging myself dramatically, yelping out from the pain that shot up my legs. But it only added more to my act.

"Mello-hurry! The bad guys are coming! They will kill me!"

"Miheal Keehl! Miheal Keehl!" Mello tried thrashing around and screamed with his eyes fluttering half-open. "Let my mommy go!"

"They need to know how to spell it, my son!" I screeched in fear.

Mello spelled his name instantly in alarm.

"Mommy-Mommy!" His neck craned in my direction as Chia scribbled it furiously onto the Death Note. I smiled gleefully before clearing my throat towards the boy.

"Mommy needs to go now, my son," I cooed before tilting my head as gesturing Chia to help me up.

"Mommy?! Mommy?!" Mello twisted his frightened expression.

"Mommy is abandoning you now, Miheal~" I sang before Chia took me out to the room, staring silently at the boy who froze in betrayal.
