Chapter 1-Origin

The first incident was in Qing Qing City. An extraordinary child was born who radiated light. After that, reports of people with superpowers popped up across the globe. No one knew what was causing these "quirks". Before long, the supernatural became the totally normal. Dreams a reality. The world became a superhuman society, with about 80% of the population processing some uncanny ability. Our streets looked like scenes from comic books. As cities swirled with chaos and confusion a new profession dominated our collective consciousness. It was an age of heroes.

When you have supernatural powers, the impossible becomes possible. My name is Kusuo Saiki, and I have psychic superpowers. 14 years ago an ordinary couple gave birth to a not-so-ordinary baby boy. I started talking when I was 14 days old, without using my voice. Soon afterward, I started walking when I was one month old. In the air. And at one year old, I ran my first errand.

My mom finally started to worry about me. Now you'd think after a year of this weirdness they'd take me to get tested, but my folks are kind of weird themselves. Not to mention, lazy. They can still act like love-birds, and they take everything in stride- including me, and all my weird quirks.

So time rolled on. I became the person you see now. A middle school student. As you would probably expect, I still have my quirks. I can bend spoons like any good psychic, and I can win any corporate giveaway I want. My life is a dream come true.

That is what you're thinking, right?

Well, let me drop some truth bombs. Bending spoons makes it harder to eat, and winning free popsicles just leads to stomachaches. 'He's that happiest boy alive, that boy can have anything and do anything!' Well, that's dead wrong. I'm the unhappiest boy alive, a boy who has nothing! Telepathy, psychokinesis, x-ray vision, foresight, teleportation, clairvoyance, et cetera et cetera. Sure, I can do all those things! But having powers like that also means having something taken away.

Sort of like how because we feed our pets they've lost the ability to hunt. Or when a mother spoils her child he loses the ability to become a functional adult. In this way, there are some key experiences I've missed out on. Hard work, cumulating in the sense of success, the thrill of being thrown a surprise party, they're all totally foreign to me. Sure, I never get angry or sad about anything, but that just means there's no joy or thrill in my life either.

Maybe I should focus on the bright side though. No drama means things are always peaceful for me, and that's not bad.

I know what you're thinking.

'Saiki? This isn't your universe.'

Right? Well, don't act so surprised. Of course I know what you're thinking. I am a psychic, after all. And yes, I know I'm in the wrong universe. But, honestly, my old one was pretty boring. Don't worry, it didn't affect anyone, not really. Though I'm sure some of my old classmates have powers now. But it's not like I'll ever see them again. After all, they'll be going to UA, and there's no way I'm going there.

'Where the hell is he?'

<Huh?> I glance up, inwardly sighing when I see my father crouched in front of the house. When he notices me he scrambles to his feet, greeting me.

"Kusuo! Welcome home, my son! You're running kind of late today, huh."

[Why is dad sitting in front of the house?]

"I'll get right to the point, Kusuo. I'm locked out of the house. Can you open it up for your old pops?"

<Are you kidding? Again?> I walk up to the door, holding my hand out and unlocking it with my quirk.

"Woah! I love those physic powers of yours, they're just so sneaky!" He beams, clearly wishing he had a cooler quirk.

<Don't call them sneaky.> A dark aura comes over dad, and he pulls his hand to his mouth.

"Kusuo, with those kinds of powers think of all the things you could do…."

<Keep your dark thoughts to yourself, Dad.>

"Ku, is that you? You're back?" A voice echoes from inside, creating a mini panic from father. He sprints inside, shouting over his back.

"We'll talk more later!"

I guess there is one thing in my life that's decidedly unpeaceful.

"I can't believe you changed the locks on me again!"

That would be my parent's current relationship.

"I hope you're hungry Kuku! I'm making you breaded pork chops for dindin!" Mom cues, clearly ignoring dad.

"Hang on, and now you're choosing to ignore me? Besides, I told you I wanted to have steak tonight!"

"I'm sorry, I forgot. But I can boil you another shoe!"

"I don't want a shoe! Leather or not!"

I wonder what went wrong with them. They used to be so passionate. Well, they're still passionate now but it's a little different.

Some time passes and we finally sit down to eat. Before me is a beautiful breaded pork chop, along with rice, soup, green beans, and a lemon slice. Before my dad is a beautifully cooked shoe stuffed with white rice with secret special sauce drizzled over it.

"Gorge yourselves, guys! I made a ton!"

"Hey, heeey!" Dad yells, angrily gesturing at his food.

"Is it good, Ku?" Mom asks, unconcerned about dad. "Oh, honey, would you like something else?" She asks him, a smile on her face.

"No, because I bet it's just the other shoe!"

"Bon appetit!" She says, placing another dish in front of him.

"It's not even the same pair!" I roll my eyes, tired of their bickering.

Dad has gone too far this time. He has unleashed mom's quirk, one that she prefers to keep in control.

KURUMI SAIKI. HER QUIRK: MONSTER!

SHE HAS A MONSTER LIVING INSIDE HER THAT SHE CANNOT CONTROL, AND SO TRIES TO KEEP HIDDEN. THOUGH SHE OFTEN USES IT TO CONVINCE HER SON TO DO THINGS!

While the two fight, well, while mom completely beats up dad, I enjoy some coffee jelly, the most delectable treat in existence. Mom throws dad at me, and the jelly flies off my spoon, but I catch it in my mouth just in time.

"You wanted to eat jelly that bad? Forget the jelly we've got bigger problems! Your mom's monster has taken over!"

"Stop running from me, you coward!" She growls, her evil aura suffocating us.

"You have to help me, you're my only hope to stop her reign of terror! Do it! Slay the demon!" He pleads, shrinking in fear as mom grabs the table. I stop the table with my power, sitting it down gently.

"Hey, Kusuo!"

I've got the weirdest parents. I really don't care about stopping another pointless fight but I can't help myself. I turn to mom, watching as her face slowly morphs back to normal.

I allow my parents to look into each other's minds so they can see that they still love each other, and all this fighting is completely useless. After this they return to their old selves, hanging on each other and constantly flirting. I sigh, sitting at the table and returning to my meal.

"Ku? There's something we need to speak to you about."

This can't be good.

"As you know, I'm a teacher at UA."

KUNIHARU SAIKI. HIS QUIRK: BIG LICK!

HE CAN ENLARGE HIS TONGUE AND LICK HIS OPPONENTS! THIS DISGUSTS THEM GREATLY!

<I'm still not sure how you pulled that off.>

"Hey, don't be mean!"

"That doesn't matter. Ku, the school has invited you to become a student!" Mom beams at me, joy radiating off of her. She has always wanted me to be a hero.

<No.>

"What do you mean, 'no'? You're recommended so you don't have to do the normal exams, and it'll be super easy for you to pass!"

<I said, no.>

"Well, I said yes." She allows her monster to take over her face for a moment. She glares angrily at me, causing even me to shiver inside.

<Fine.>

"Yay!"
