Rose in a Wall of Thorns

Rosemary was the ugliest girl born in the Ashen Village, a barren place where nothing would grow and animals were scarce. Women were used only to keep the generations and reaching her 17th birthday without having anyone to take her hand she was on the verge of being expulsed from home, where certain death by either starvation or frostbite awaited. With memories of a life past, Rose prayed for someone to rescue her. But that never happened. And so, Rosemary had her fate sealed. Or so she thought. Because everything changed when The one and Only Draco decided to move and live on the other side of the lake. A monstrous beast told to eat virgins and children, to use dark magic and powers, and to corrupt the land and mind of the mortals. As suddenly as he appeared Rosemary was thrown into his awaiting claws to be used as he deemed fit.

Five Iron Coins

"He sold me for five iron coins to the demon?" I asked.

Rory simply nodded.

That Man is fucking insane. Five Iron coins are not enough to buy a fucking fish. Is this all the worth I have to that man?

"I'm sorry Rose" Roy said.

"Shhh. Don't worry. It's not your fault" I knew Rory would not have enough to pay more than that when almost everything he did went back into his family, but holy shit how I hate that man.

I breathed to help calm myself down.

Rory also didn't understand everything that happened in the confusion, the only thing he knows is that the old fart traded me, and when the dark knight was not satisfied with the deal for some reason it decided to take the coins back.

Heavy clouds started to gather in front of the moon and the world started to enter its trued darkness. Living so long with only the light of the moon made everyone used to the poor sight condition, and I was confident I could see way better in the dark than when I was back on Earth. But the thing is, it is not true darkness, the red of the moon is so empowering if simply feels like we are in a perpetual state where dawn is setting.

The best way to describe it would be when it wasn't dark enough to turn the car's lower light, but it was not day enough to keep them off. A strange in-between, where red painted the landscape, instead of the usual yellows and oranges.

"I need to talk with Mother," I said, dreading the walk back to the house, but knowing it was needed.

Rory nodded and let me go.

...

It didn't take long for me to arrive at the house, and a commotion was taking place.

"-s cursed. We all know it" I heard someone talking. No one noticed me approaching in the dark. I could only see the silhouette of people now.

"You aren't sure of that" I heard Mother hissing a comeback.

"For the Stars woman. Ever since she was born you lost every male baby. All of your neighbors had only one male kid so far and now the Dragon Army is at our doorstep demanding this tiny village to help with a so-called 'quota' of either five males or one pretty female" Someone said.

"We can't afford to let our children go, there are too few boys"

"And we can't let the man go either. That blasted hound attack left us with too few of them too"

"Your charcoal-headed kid is an abnormality. You must have done some sort of deal with a demon for it to happen. For generations, everyone in this village has been born with red and orange hair"

"I did no such thing. Take your words back" Mother retorted to that remark.

"Even the black knight told us the girl was Despiteful. We can't use her to get the knights to leave us, and no one will marry the abomination"

"Something needs to be done"

"She should be given as food to the dragon"

"Didn't you hear, not even the dragon would want to eat that thing"

I kept on listening as everyone said how disgusting I was, how I should be disposed of, and how not even the black knights would use me as a torture thing because of how ugly I looked.

And Mother just listened. She never said anything to defend me. The only thing she did was protect herself, her husband, and her other children.

If I had the strength to run I would do so.

But I was so tired it was physically impossible.

So I kept there.

And I kept listening.
