The Obelisk

Two elemental balls of energy slammed at not suspecting a group of wolves.

The elemental explosion killed the majority of the mutts. But, the ones which were at the edges of the explosion survived it.

Survived for a few moments as blue energy arrows quickly took them down before they could realise what was truly going on!

"This was much easier than before," Julis commented from her side.

"That's because we sneak attacked them," Alex commented back.

"That's true I suppose, is that how you...hunt them now?" She asked curiously.

"Yes, now let's continue travelling I want to progress more on this." He picked her up and started travelling once again.

This continued several times…

Travelling, finding a group of wolves, quickly dispatching them…

Eventually, Alex and Julis arrived at their destination and he started working on chopping the branches.

This process continued for at least two months…

" I think this is enough…" Julis said as she looked at the river in front of them, she could barely control the awe of seeing the scenery in front of her.

"Yeah, wanna take a dip?" He asked her seriously.

"In water infested by massive piranhas?" She asked with a deadpan look.

"I will kill them with lightning first, then you can wash yourself up." He said obviously.

"..."

"...Fine, not going to lie, I want to bath…" she said with a frown.

"You are not the only one, now you know why I like showering a lot in the mornings." He said with a nostalgic look. Remembering the shower in his house.

Julis nodded at him, she was just like him wanting to return to civilisation!

Seeing that she agreed with him, Alex jumped down from the treetop, the girl nearly screamed from shock and absurdity at what her boyfriend had just done.

She grabbed his neck and squeezed him hard looking at the approaching ground.

Alex casually used his lightning and landed on the ground.

The pinkhead quickly left his hug and collapsed on the ground taking deep breaths.

"Next...time...tell...me you going to do something crazy!" Julis looked with an angry look at him.

He just scratched the back of his head for a second and smiled at her.

"Sorry, forgot that you have fear of that."

"I don't! I could fly with my Strega powers, but not with my Pyromancy! I haven't reached that point yet!" She said that while getting back on her feet.

"Just kill the fishes around and let me bathe and I will forget that you nearly gave me a heart attack." The pinkhead said with a small smile.

Alex nodded at her as he walked past her and went to the water once he was knee-deep in water he channelled his electricity into it.

Slowly the pink-haired girl noticed fishes surfacing… upside down… dead…

And there were lots of them…

'What kind of monstrosities this river has?' She looked with fear and awe at these fishes.

As someone who has no power in water, this place would be a death trap for her!

She then noticed their front teeth, the girl subconsciously gulped down, they were massive!

While Julis started to have second thoughts about washing herself up, Alex went even deeper into the water and sent several more pulses of electricity.

It was another of those short wonders seeing electricity travelling through water and frying a bunch of fish similar to the prehistoric era ones…

Eventually, he returned from the water.

"I will stand watch while you can relax and take your time," Alex said to her as he looked back at the water, he saw how Gajau corpses started to disappear into particles.

Before she could say anything he spoke again.

"Don't worry about electricity in the water, I pushed it as far away from this location as possible." He reassured his pink-haired girlfriend, who just sighed and started to undress.

While Alex would want to do nothing but just stare at her, this was not the right situation, he would do that in his house bathroom where massive piranhas are not lurking in the water…

As Julis was washing herself up, Alex continued to observe the water further distance.

Around ten minutes later the girl got out of the water and used the heat of her flames to dry herself up.

"I am done, are you going to wash yourself too?" She asked him from her side.

"Yeah, just wait for me…" Alex jumped into the water without any wait.

Julis didn't have a chance to say anything, as her boyfriend like a missile entered the water, moments later arcs of electricity exploded from the water.

Not long after that, Alex jumped out from the water with a disappointing look.

"I guess it only has Gajau…" He said with a sign.

"Maybe other types of creatures are in deeper parts of the river?" She said from her end.

Alex just shrugged at her, as he pulled out his phone and checked out the inventory…

As he expected it only had Gajaus parts.

"Well, it doesn't matter at this point, we still have around two months to return to the safe house." He shrugged while making his phone disappear.

Julis slowly nodded, at him same time trying to think how much distance this place truly was.

"We should arrive back faster than you did last time, don't forget you are much faster than before." She said that with a smile.

She got a smile back from him, as he picked her up and then returned to the treetops.

This time Alex decided to travel slightly along the river shoreline.

The river unlike the trees was more interesting to look at.

"Alex… what is that?" Julis got his attention, as she pointed at something.

His gaze went where she pointed at.

"Is that… An Obelisk?" He said that with disbelief.

Without much thought, he changed the direction and quickly descended to ground level.

He lowered the pinkhead back to the ground and walked over to the Obelisk-like structure.

"Look it has some sort of pictures." The girl said as she looked closely.

"Yes…"

Alex looked at the pictures, they looked very simple, four directions at four directions there were symbols for landmarks and animals representing that place.

"The west… look, it's a boar with large tusks…"

"Yes… and it has mountains for symbol," Alex said with realisation. Is this obelisk a navigator of some sort?

"Then this one looks like a symbol for a river, which is in the north. Is this showing us the way of some kind?" The girl asked with some confusion.

While Alex realised what this was after seeing an animal in the east direction, he connected the dots.

He should be, after all, it dungeon was created for him…

"Yes and no, this shows us how to progress in this dungeon." He pointed at West.

"In the West near the mountains, we have the Calydonian Boar." Then he pointed at the north.

"In the North, where the river is, we have a massive snake lurking in the depths of it." He said that while making out the drawings of a snake.

Knowing how the dungeon loves to scale up, that thing should be massive…

"In the East, which looks like swamps or marshlands, that creature is a Jyuratodus…"

"A what?" The girl asked with confusion as she looked at the drawing of a fish with reptile-like legs…

"Jyuratodus is a creature from the Monster Hunter franchise." He said while crossing his arms.

"It's a cross between a mudfish and a land wyvern, and it seems it has made the swamps its domain."

"Franchise? As in a some sort entertainment medium?" She asked with wide eyes, is she going to battle some creature created by people for entertainment?

"A video game more exactly, a video game where hunting massive monsters is a regular daily activity." He said with slight excitement and fear.

If Jyaratodus is around then what about more serious and deadly creatures? Will other areas have more beings pulled out from that franchise?

Monsters which on purpose are created to be deadly, and then pumped up steroids by R.O.B.?

"You know about this creature then?" She turned toward him with a questioning gaze.

"I did, before the rewrite, I played the game quite a bit, it's not a serious threat, as it was in one of the first maps available for the player, but here we are not players and we don't have life bars." He seriously explained.

"Jyaratodus is dangerous in a swamp, so we will need to lure it out from it, the monster possesses the ability to spit mud in large quantities. So, if we are stuck in it our mobility will be affected, and once stuck the beast will attack, remember this… the beast is related to Gajau. So, you can imagine its teeth." He grimaced remembering the piranha-like creatures in the river.

"So…" Julis gulped down. " it's a car-size super piranha?" She said with a pale look, fighting water-based creatures is not her thing!

"That was in the game, I have no idea how much the dungeon creator has beefed the creature up, it might not even possess the same pattern as in the game, all I know instead of mud spits it has something too akin to a high-pressure water laser." He shrugged while saying that, Alex has not seen the beast yet, he can only speculate.

Julis just paled even more from hearing that.

"You're not helping here!" She said with a fearful voice, instead of focusing on the Fish-wyvern hybrid she looked at the last remaining direction.

"And that one looks like Rhinoceros…" She said with a frowning look.

"Yes, apart from those plate-like drawings on its body, I guess that it's some kind of armour." He said with a contemplating look, it's somewhat interesting if he could make stuff from the creatures like in Monster Hunter.

So far, he only got a single, to two pieces per kill, but if it follows Monster Hunter then the big creatures will drop from three to five or more pieces of the loot.

'If all this is true, then I need to look upon blacksmithing, even without knowing enchanting or anything like that, the stuff made from big monsters in Monster Hunter gives quite big bonuses.' He thought about that as he looked upon Jyaratodus drawing on the obelisk.

"Alex… look more closely at the centre… it looks like a big drawing of a tree." Julis pointed at the centre drawing it was all-encompassing, at first he thought that it was just ornaments around the four directions and the drawings of the beasts which are in those directions.

But, if one takes a step back and looks at the bigger picture it's a drawing of a massive tree.

"And those lines, it looks like some sort of wolf-like tattoo…"

"Dang it… I think that is the final boss of this dungeon… and I hope, I really, hope that it's not Fenrir…" He thought with a pale look.

The pinkhead thought for a moment before remembering what or who this Fenrir was...

"Fenrir… oh God…" Julis paled too, then a forceful smile appeared on her face.

"I'm sure for a first dungeon no one would put the creature which caused the Ragnarok for a dungeon Boss." She said that, more like reassuring herself with those words.

"Knowing how sadistic is the creator of this place, who knows." Alex wasn't sure. But, deep down, there is no way in hell he is fighting a being from the top ten strongest list while being at such a low level!

"Anyway, with this obelisk help, we have a general idea of what we have to do, first we going to deal with beasts which we have an advantage of."

Julis nodded hearing that, it made sense after all.

"The way this is painted means that we have to kill the beasts before unlocking the massive tree in the drawing." He pointed at the drawing.

"Which will in turn allow us to face the wolf in the drawing?" She finished for him.

"Yes, now let's go…"
