Family Trip

In a small home in Wisconsin USA Silas Runkle is busy packing items into his car. "Anna, is that everything? I don't want to forget anything before we set off." He said as he turned towards his wife, Anna Runkle.

"Yes dear, that should be everything we need, but you should still ask the kids if they got everything." She replied with a smile as dazzling as the sun.

"They are 16 and 20, I shouldn't have to ask them. They should be able to take care of themselves. Can you tell them to get out here, we need to leave in the next hour or we will be late." Silas said as he got into the car.

"I will tell them, but you need to loosen up a bit. This is a family trip and nobody wants a grouch in the car with them." Said Anna playfully before she began walking back towards their home.

'I am not a grouch, I just know that those kids will forget something. They always forget something.' Silas thought as he started the car and played some of his favorite music. 'Sigh, I just hope that there isn't much traffic. I haven't seen my parents in over 20 years, and this is the first time they will see my kids. I hope they haven't forgotten me.' Thought Silas just before he noticed his family approaching the car. He couldn't help but smile seeing his family. His two sons and his wife had been what kept him going in life, and now he gets to show them off to his parents.

"Alright, you rascals get in the car. We need to leave soon or else we won't make it in time." Anna said towards her children before she herself entered the passenger seat of the car, right next to her husband.

Their two kids got into the car, but just as they were about to drive away, they saw a bright light flash off in the distance. Silas, seeing that something was wrong, told his family to not panic. However, that had no effect as his wife and children both knew what that flash was, it was a nuclear bomb. The world had been at war with all of Asia for 10 years after all. It would be strange if they had not understood that this was an attack.

As they all stared at where the light came from, everyone in the car was fearful that this would be the end for them. However, Silas was not willing to let his family die, so as soon as he comprehended what was happening he started driving in reverse to get as far away as possible. This proved futile though as in the next second all the windows in the car broke.

Silas was stabbed by numerous shards of glass. He looked over to his left to check on his wife, but what he saw left him horrified. His wife had a shard of glass stuck in her neck. She had blood seeping out of the wound and seemed as though she couldn't catch her breath. She would try to breathe between coughs, but her throat was filling with blood at a speed which made it impossible.

She was looking back towards her children at this moment. Her eyes were filled with sadness and tears were running down her face as she looked back. The children were not in any better of a situation than her. Her eldest son had a large glass shard stuck in his chest as he looked back at her. The glass had hit an artery and the blood had already begun to form a small puddle where he sat.

He knew that both he and his mother would die from their wounds, so he said his last words. "I love you mom and dad." She could not speak due to the blood in her throat, so instead she repeatedly nodded her head as more tears started to fall. Her other son had already died. The glass had pierced his heart and he had no time to react. But even so he had a smile on his face, for he knew that he would at least die near his family.

Silas witnessed all of this happening. He watched his wife cry for their children, and he heard his son say that he loved them. Hearing his son say this made him snap back into his senses. He immediately started trying to help his wife and son. He got them both out of the car and tried his best to stop the blood, but they both died in his arms less than a minute later. They were dead, all of them were dead.

The family that he loved so dearly had died, and he had no idea what to do. He tried his best to wake them up but nothing worked. Silas had lost his wife and kids. Realizing this he got his other son out of the car and hugged all three of them while crying. He was being soaked in their blood as well as his own, but he did not care. Silas only wanted to hug them all one last time but it was too late.

Silas cried while hugging his family's corpses until he himself collapsed. He had lost too much blood and would die soon as well. 'I guess that this is the end of the Runkle family. If only I had chosen not to go on a trip they would still be here. We would be inside the house scared and possibly injured, but alive and together.' He thought as tears rolled down his face and he slowly lost consciousness.
