50 Chapter 50 : Director Fury and Amanda Waller

"Hey, all that stuff about his kid... you wouldn't really do that, right?"

"You don't know half of what I would do, John."

—John Economos and Amanda Waller

In Gotham City, the aftermath of the mutant monster attack brought an eerie calm to the urban area. Although the surface turmoil seemed to have subsided, beneath the undercurrent, the enigmatic Court of Owl continued its covert movements, evading the awareness of most citizens.

As the city slowly recovered from the chaos, the repercussions of the riot were only beginning. Gotham, being the nation's top metropolis and an economic center, was profoundly affected by the large-scale terrorist attack. The shocking event, claiming both civilian and influential lives, left an indelible mark on the collective psyche.

Federal News broadcasted the latest updates: "Around 2 o'clock midnight today, Gotham City fell victim to a terrorist attack. Hundreds of colossal beasts rampaged through the city, resulting in over 2,000 casualties and extensive damage to homes and public facilities. Additionally, notable figures such as Jerion, chairman of Shell Group, Democratic Congressman Reinhardt, Gotham City's third prosecutor Hugh Gaia, and Simmons Leonard, the current head of the Leonard family, were among the 25 individuals attacked and killed. No organization has claimed responsibility as of now."

New York Channel 1 reported a unique angle: "In the dead of night, Gotham City faced an onslaught of rare monsters—prehistoric behemoths numbering in the hundreds. The relentless attack endured for several hours, causing a staggering 3,000 casualties, including 25 wealthy officials. No organization or individual has stepped forward to claim responsibility for this unprecedented incident."

The mainstream media in the United States reacted intensely to the Gotham attack. However, with the cause yet to be determined, most large-scale media outlets adopted a unified and neutral reporting stance. There was an exception—New York's Daily Bugle.

J. Jonah Jameson, the mustache owner, expressed frustration with the lack of engaging press releases. He berated trainee reporter Peter Parker for not standing out among the crowd. Peter defended his stance, citing the absence of internal information within the first eight hours.

Despite being scolded, Peter maintained his professional ethics and resisted fabricating stories. Jameson, unimpressed, instructed them to capture Spiderman photos on the streets. Eddie Brock, seizing an opportunity, rushed to the boss's office.

An hour later, the Daily Bugle reported the Gotham attack on its homepage, taking a unique angle. Objective reporting was limited, with most sections criticizing the incompetence of the Gotham Police Department. Speculations about the monster's origins were rampant, and Group was said to launch an investigation.

In Washington, DC, at White House Conference Room 1, high-ranking officials engaged in a heated discussion about the Gotham attack. The primary point of contention was the perceived inaction of the National Guard.

Governor Jeffrey Jones of Illinois defended the timely response, issuing orders to the National Guard within forty-five minutes. However, accusations were made against the National Guard's Commander Mars for ignoring calls for help from the Gotham Police Department.

The U.S. President addressed Speaker McConaughey, urging against attacking and framing Governor Jones. He explained that the poor decree was caused by drunk correspondents in the National Guard damaging communication equipment, emphasizing that it was not Governor Jones's fault.

Despite the explanation, McConaughey was visibly angered. As a seasoned politician, he saw the underlying political motives and vowed to oppose future proposals in Congress.

After McConaughey left, the President turned his attention to two individuals—Director Fury and Chairman Waller, a pair of black professionals. The president sought their perspectives on the Gotham attack, looking for insights into the government's response.
