chapter 2-A Monster Horde?

Demon Lord … Demon Lord huh. This definitely would be my least expected occupation when I had first realised I was transported to another world with a completely different appearance. First of all, I'm not even sure of what my job as a Demon Lord is supposed to be like since all I have known about them are from novels and fairy tales such as Heroes from another world bringing peace and freedom after defeating the destruction and fear caused by the supposedly evil Demon Lords.

Well I suppose I'll just have to continue on my journey on exploring and knowing more about this so-called fantasy world that I had randomly been transferred to. To begin with, how big is this world really? It seems that this world is split into different continents and perhaps different empires and kingdoms seeing how it's usually the case.

As I sat near the riverside contemplating about what I should do from now onwards since I have a somewhat rough idea of what existence I current am, I was awakened from my thoughts as I frowned slightly at the sound that was emitted just right behind me in the forest.

"Purrr"

Twisting my head cautiously as a form of reflex I turned in order to look at what sort of monster or creature it was I was greeted by a snow white furry fox which was smaller than the size of my palm which caused me to be slightly surprised and pleased since I didn't want to engage in a battle at this moment without any kinds of preparation whatsoever.

< Snow Fox Level 0 (Baby)

Age: 0

Animal (Friendly)

Abilities : Strength ( 1 ) , Agility ( 1 ) , Intelligence ( 1 ) , Luck ( 10 )

Title : Lucky Fox

Skills : None

Story : A normal snowy fox born during the winter seasons. Due to its peculiarity to attract all

sorts of unexplainable occurrences and incidents it was abandoned by its herd in order to

fend for itself.

What is this? The first thing that went through my mind when I peeked at the status list that appeared the moment I concentrated hard on the fox was what sort of animal is this? Apparently it isn't a monster whatsoever and it's a normal ordinary animal with ridiculously low abilities but abnormal luck indeed.

Looking at how adorable the fox was, without hesitation I went forward and picked it up as I held its tiny body and placed it on my right shoulder. It doesn't seem to mind it as it laid down peacefully while occasionally swinging its flurry white tail around tickling my neck and purring softly.

Seems like I really have a thing for cute and adorable stuffs, this is really bad I don't think I suit a cruel and evil Demon Lord who devours and kills monsters and humans alike without flinching and bathing in their blood whatsoever.

Thinking of such undesirable thoughts in my head I continued my journey onwards to the slightly small town located just a kilometre away from me which was called Fenlin Town as mentioned by the aloof Miss Rin-san. After what seems like ages I managed to reach the gates of the town who was guarded by two muscular middle-aged men armed with spears and in light armour appearing to be the town guards as one of them who had hair greying out held out his hand to stop me as he said.

"Hold! You'll have to pay entry fee in order to enter the town if you are not given a status plate by the Guild. The price for the fees are the same for everyone whether or not you're a child or an adult which would be five coppers."

Damn! I knew something like this would come up. Thank heavens though that they didn't ask me to show my status list or I'll probably be captured and imprisoned in some kind of dungeon or even killed off after they see my occupation. Might as well pay it since I've some money given to me from the kind yet stern knight earlier when I woke up.

Digging around the sack that I kept on my neck as I strung a string through it earlier using the fabric that I wore since it was in tatters and rags I held out a silver coin since that was the smallest currency I had as the sack given to me contained five silver coins and 2 gold ones and passed it to the guard.

The slightly older guard was slightly surprised though when I gave him the silver coin, he probably thought I wasn't able to pay up since my clothes were in such bad condition not to mention I looked like a child as he passed me back 15 copper coins. It seems a silver coin in this world is equal to 20 copper coins and bronze coins apparently do not exist from what I know so far. The other guard who had been closely inspecting me called out to the older guard nodding to him.

"Alright you are clear to go. Do not cause any trouble in the town or else you'll be caught and punished according to the laws!"

After communicating with them for a bit i learned that the significantly older guard was called Edrek after picking it up from his partner calling him.

With a stern warning Edrek let me into the town as he and the other guard continued to stay root in place while holding their spears like statues. Edrek was the older guard that received my payment as he started chatting with me while the other guard was looking at me and inspecting whether or not I had any suspicious or smuggled items. Apparently he was already close to forty who had been a guard for over five years and his daughter was in the town working as an inn waitress, since I didn't have any place to stay he introduced me to where his daughter was working at.

It seems to me that having pets or companions was actually not surprising in this world as the guards didn't even have a single change of expression after they saw the fox perched on my shoulder as though it was as common as breathing.

Walking into the town I was expecting a joyous and buzzling street filled with adventurers carrying their heavy swords and shields and peddlers showing off their attractions to the civilians and adventurers alike with haggling and stuffs. Yet what I envisioned did not appear, the streets that were supposed to be filled to the brim was desolate and almost empty with only a few people walking about with a somewhat anxious expression on their faces.

What sort of town is this supposed to be?! Seems like I picked a bad town to start off right in the beginning. I really am an unlucky one aren't I. Being a demon lord right in the beginning was already bad enough for my heart and now my first town seems like a ghost town already! Sooner or later I'm going to have a heart attack thanks to this wretched world.

First off I probably have to get some information about why this town had such a gloomy and fearful atmosphere, with my eyes and legs roaming about the dead town I found the inn that Edrek had introduced to me.

The outer appearance of the inn didn't look so bad, at least It wasn't dilapidated and run-down with stains all about the walls with cracks and tears all around like a collapsing building. With a slight nudge of my hand I pushed open the door as I walked into the inn.

A quick sweep over the surrounding told me that the inn wasn't in a bad shape as although its furniture and furnishings weren't exactly top-notch it was at least above average. Seeing that there was a female waitress right at the counter I went forth and tried to ask her about this town.

"Hey, I was wondering why is this town so quiet and empty?"

"Huh? Haven't you heard? It seems that there's a monster horde appearing just right in the north gates of the town! Most of the adventurers have already left the town and started fighting against the monsters! There's even supposedly a classified B-class monster in there!"

… Great.
