At that moment, however, there was a cry behind him. Carl turned and saw Jamal stagger as a blaster beam directed from a Corpsman further away along the corridor.
“Go!” Jamal bellowed.
The others sprinted forward. In the open space just in front of the blue surface of the incursion field, three corridors converged. Carl shoved Armand through the surface, then turned. Heat beams were coming from all three corridors now. Jamal was on his knees, maybe a dozen feet away. Enzo stood in the middle of the space, his cutlass weaving a blur that deflected each of the beams in turn. This was only partially successful, however, and his left arm had already been seared away. He turned and yelled at Carl: “Go!”
