33 Protect Everyone

"How dare you throw me like that? Do you think you can kidnap my wife and I will let it go because you hold power? I will go upto royal family, I will plead in the royal court. I will not let you.." Harold paused when he felt a shadow looming behind him. He paused and gasped when he saw Damien standing behind him.

He took a step back but his face was still full of rage.

"Your grace, my wife. She is sick and needs attention. I do not know what happened but I have every right to take her back." he demanded in a cold voice when Dami tilted his head. He looked at Harold from top to bottom. Harold felt conscious under his penetrating gaze. His mind was already working on things Damien could do to harm him.

He knew he should be using this chance to ask for compensation. It was clear that Damien had an interest in Evangeline. If he would use this chance, he could get rid of all the debts. Or more! He could ask for lands or treasures. He knew that Damien was looking for a woman and Evan was the best he could ever have. It would change both of their fates. But still.. He did not want to do it.

He did not want to give Evangeline. The women belong to him. He was her husband, her fate and he would keep her.

"We both know that you did not hold any authority to demand something from me. It would be better that you leave Graystone." Dami warned when Harold gritted his teeth.

"I beg to differ your grace. On your words and the way you address me. I have married into the family of my wife and I am known as Midnight Star now. Perhaps you have forgotten. The way you have forgotten that Evangeline is my wife." Damien chuckled at the blatant threat.

His crimson eyes glimmering that had always instilled fear in the eyes of his enemies.

"I do not care what name you use to call yourself, in my eyes you are a scum. You have always been. If I want, I can get rid of you at this moment. Just a stab and you would die. No one would ever know that you have been to my palace. You will disappear for the world and my knights would decide to help your family in finding you again. Too bad! They would only find your corpse lying in the river.

Can you imagine how much your mistress will cry? Or she would just click her tongue and find another lover who could follow her whims. As long as it is about Evangeline, this time she would be announced as count. And then… we will have our happily ever after." Harold flinched and took a step back cursing in his heart.

His aide knew that he was here but if he could be killed. How much time would it take them to find Callum and silence him too. He gritted his teeth as his hands clenched into a fist.

"So, you want to leave or stand and see how it would play?" Harold took a step back and almost ran out of the garden.

"This is not over yet, your grace. I will return with force next time." he threatened but he was already running for his life. Damien looked at him and scoffed.

"A true man would stand for the honor of his wife more than for his life, you have already lost her." Gerald sighed and shook his head. He had told the duke to send the lady back for now or the case would escalate. His master had always been a sensible one when it comes to receiving advice.

If he had any idea that he was going to react in this way, he would have stayed silent.

"Your grace, what if the man returns with an army?" Damien shook his head and laughed.

"We have given enough debt to the new trading business of the family right?" Gerald paused, knowing well where this was going. His face stiffened at once.

"Your grace, their plan of extending their branches to borders is a perfect one and we have given loan for pavement of roads. When the task is completed, we will get enough taxes and at worst it will double the amount we have invested." his voice went grim as if he could already feel his light pockets when Dami raised a brow.

"Are we lacking money or a duchess?" the man's lips smacked into a thin line.

"The project could improve your image in the society too, your grace. They only need to see that you are like them only and the curse is only a rumor. Then we can have enough contenders for your wife. That lady is already married, your grace." The last line was added with so much force that Gerald could feel the grinding of his teeth. He was sure to get a heart attack. If he knew Ian was doing all this, he would have stopped the young man from loitering around.

"You can not change the color of my eyes, Gerald or you want me to stand in front of the fire for you to see?" The man flinched at once and opened his mouth to speak but Dami already looked away.

"Force the man to give divorce or I will take the matters in my hand and you will regret it again." Gerald went grim at once. Damien did not stay to hear the rant of his employee. Gerald took a deep breath as he watched Dami leaving and stared at the sky.

"For once… I wanted a normal woman as the mistress of the palace. I would have accepted it even if he had chosen a commoner girl over a married woman. If only… he did not have the desire to protect everyone in this world!!"
