8 CH - 6 - Nanny McDead - Part - One
" So what is the title?... No wait don't tell me, take it to Gina. I want to enjoy it like a regular reader." Castle asks. (Pardon me for the teaseđ.)
"You sure Dad"
"Yes, I am." He says with a conflicted look on his face but continues "I will call Gina right now and let her know you are coming tomorrow."
Castle then calls Gina and says .....(ringing)... Hey, Gina, it's me, Castle..... no I haven't finished the manuscript.... how do you know I am not writing.... actually (pauses to think) I...I already have the first 80 pages ready, ..... the name of the lead?... umm the name of the main character is" Castle looks around for and sees a Bar to his right which reads <Nick's Bar > and he goes "... Nick..ki... yeah Nikki ...no that's not a stripper's name. Her full name is Nikki Heat and she is a tough but savvy detective with the NYPD.... Yeah, you will have it by tomorrow morning. I will send it with Noah when he comes to deliver his manuscript for the book he had been working on... Well, that's why I called you to tell you the news but you had to go all crazy ex-wife/boss on me... Yes, I know you sign my checks... You know what... screw you... bitch" and hangs up the phone. Then looks to his side at Noah who looks like he is ready to explode laughing and when he saw Castle look at him and smile like nothing ever happened he just couldn't control it anymore and starts laughing seeing this Castle also starts laughing this continued for a minute.
When finally Noah gathers himself and says "So Nikki Heat?"
"Yeah, imagine the titles Heat Wave, Naked Heat and so many more....?"
"And let me guess Beckett is Nikki?"
"Yeah... but I still need to learn more about her to give her character more depth and I need more ideas for cases"
"Well lucky for you I read the recent election polls and it looks like your friend is going to be facing a tough reelection campaign," says Noah in a suggestive manner, and Castle picking up on it smiles at him and says "Very lucky indeed"
He quickly dials up the mayor and sets everything up to work as a consultant for the NYPD and tail Beckett in her cases. Then the father-son duo heads home after picking up the cheeseburgers.
[Next Day, 19th Precinct - Morning.]
Castle sits at a table in the captain's office, his phone on the table, looking over a stack of documents. Across from him, is a humorless, suited LAWYER (mid-40s, balding).
The lawyer says "You do understand that by signing these documents, you'll be waiving a number of legal rights in exchange for the opportunity to accompany and observe Detective Beckett in her duties as an officer for the NYPD?"
"Yes," Castle says
"Mr. Castle be advised if you get injured following Det. Beckett to research your next novel... You cannot sue the city. If you get shot...you cannot sue the city. If you get killed..."
"My lifeless remains cannot sue the city," Castle says with a straight face seeing this Beckett who was leaning on a wall sighs in defeat.
The lawyer corrects Castle by saying "Your heirs, Mr. Castle. Your heirs cannot sue the city"
"Do I have to wait for him to sign or can I shoot him now" Beckett jokes (or not)
"Mr. Castle these waivers are serious business perhaps you will feel more comfortable by referring the matter to your attorney"
"What... are you kidding? She would never let me sign these..." says Castle as he pulls out his pen "Unfortunately it's her job to get me out of trouble and not prevent me from getting into it."
Suddenly Beckett's phone rings, she picks it up and answers "Beckett...where?...Alright, I am on my way."
"But... wait where are you going?"
"I have work to do"
"What? we have a case?" asks Castle all happy
"No. I have a case. You have paperwork..." and leaves the room.
[Inside Noah's Car - Afternoon]
Noah was having a very good day. He delivered his manuscript and his dad's to Gina and all that went without a hitch, and right now he was driving back home so that he can enjoy this peaceful day with a good book, but just then his phone rings he answers via the car's Bluetooth "Hello"
"Noah, What is this that I hear about your dad signing waivers without telling me?" says a calm female voice that Noah immediately recognized.
"I don't know anything about it, Jessica"
"Is that so?"
"Yes"
"Hmmm then why don't you come and see me with a copy of the waiver Rick signed"
"Why do I need to come there, I can just mail it to you"
"Well if you come who knows maybe you might see something that interests you"
"Sure, I will see you in 3 hours." and Noah cuts the call and drives to the precinct to get the documents.
[30 minutes later.]
Noah reaches outside the Precinct and sees Castle and Beckett arriving in Beckett's car. So he quickly parks the car and walks up to them. Castle seeing his son asks "Noah, what are you doing here?"
"Jessica called saying something about waivers you signed." then looks at Beckett and says "Hello Det. Beckett." to which she smiles and nods.
"Ohhh....ooooh yeah I did that but forgot to tell her about it"
"Yeah dad I totally believe you, dad," Noah says sarcastically.
"Thank you son." Castle says smiling as we walk into the precinct and wait for the elevator. He continues "so does she need something from me?"
"No I just need to go and give her a copy of the waiver you signed "
"Why are you going there?"
"Apparently she has something interesting for me"
"Any idea what it is?" Castle asks as they get into the elevator.
"Nope."
"So this Jessica is Castle's lawyer." asks Beckett
"Yes.." answers Castle
"I sense a but coming" Beckett says
"Not a 'But' it's an 'And' that's coming" says Noah and continues "She is his Lawyer and was his ex-girlfriend" to which Castle smiles and nods in agreement.
Beckett says "Why is that not surprising. You married your publisher, dated your lawyer so tell me Castle what do you do with your doctor?"
"Do you really wanna know" Castle says teasingly just then the Elevator door opens and Beckett gets out ignoring Castle's reply following her Noah and Castle come out as well.
In front of them, they see Esposito, Ryan, and Cap. Montgomery looking at a computer screen with keen interest seeing this Castle says "Three men huddled around a computer. I hope that's not porn. And if it is, I'd like in."
"Esposito and Ryan pulled security tapes from the elevator and the building's rear entrance," says Cap. Montgomery.
"Front door has a twenty-four-hour doorman," adds Ryan
Esposito motions to the screen depicting the inside of the elevator the victim took. (Note: There's a time and date stamp, running clock.)
"This is the Elevator's cam. The victim gets on with the laundry basket. Goes down to the basement to put the kid's laundry into the washer. ... Few minutes later, she gets on, and heads back upstairs to the apartment. Then about forty minutes later, she rides the elevator to the basement again." says Esposito.
"We're thinking probably to take the kid's clothes out of the washer and put them in the drier," adds Ryan.
"Camera never picks her up again." says the Captain.
"Only other person who rides the elevator all the way to the basement during the next hour is the old lady who found the body," says Ryan.
"So, whoever attacked her had to have used the stairwell, otherwise the camera would have seen them," says Beckett
We see Noah and Castle still looking at the elevator footage.
"We got three maintenance workers on duty that day. We're gonna run their names tonight," says Ryan picking up a file.
Hearing this Castle turns his attention away from the footage and asks "Why run only the building's workers? Why not all the neighbors?"
"What are you basing that on?"
"I'm basing it on the fact that a neighbor makes a better story." hearing this they all roll their eyes and Noah laughs slightly and adds "You know in a weird way that kinda makes sense"
"And who are you kid??" asks Ryan
"Sorry for the late introduction. My name is Noah, Noah Castle. You must be Det. Ryan and you, Det. Esposito. I have heard a lot about you guys."
"From were? Castle??" asks Esposito
"Yes, that and from reading the manuscripts he writes every day. Also Captain I would like a copy of the waiver my Dad signed this morning" to which the Captain agrees and asks a desk clerk to get it for him.
"What were you talking about when you said it kinda makes sense in a weird way?" asks Beckett.
"Well, I think what my dad was trying to point out earlier was What do any of us know about our neighbors in this city? right dad" to which Castle smiles proudly and says "Exactly. What do any of us know about our neighbors in this city? You think the guy who lived next door to Son of Sam knew he was living next to Son of Sam?"
"He's right. Neighbors in Berkowitz's building had no idea he was the Son of Sam Killer." confirms the captain.
"Thank You," says Castle then asks out of nowhere"What about the guy in 8-B? "
"Who?" questions Beckett and Castle seeing that he has everyone's interest says
"8-B. The quiet guy; the kinda guy who walks past you every day and you never notice. Only he notices Sara. She was young, beautiful. The kind of girl the guy never stood a chance with. We all know those girls, right?"
Beckett sees the four, Esposito, Ryan, and even Captain Montgomery and Noah were drawn in. And all of them looking at her leading her to roll her eyes. Then--
Castle continues "At first, it was just a game... figure out her schedule, when does she do the laundry, when is she alone. Until it became something more, something he can't control."
Now in the background, we see a few other cops stopping to listen.
"He uses the stairs, obviously, to avoid the elevator's camera. Then he waits, concealed, in the shadows. And when she enters that laundry room, he pounces."
The room now hanging on his every word. He continues
"And now, as he looks into her vacant, lifeless eyes, he wanted to tell her...he never meant to kill her, all he ever really wanted was to be noticed... That's when he felt the heat of that drier against his skin, so he picks up her limp body in his arms and gently places it inside. He almost smiled at his good fortune when he found the quarter in his pocket, sliding it into the c slot, buying himself the time to do what he does best... disappear."
You can hear the sound of a pin drop in the room right now. But Castle's only been fucking with them and suddenly shifts gears. Pops back to affable and says "Just saying, better story"
Noah smiles at this while Beckett almost can't hide her smile at Castle for what he just pulled. The rest of the team looks at each other thinking 'It almost makes sense '(right?)
"Let's see what we can find out about the neighbors. (then, in a sharper tone) And someone better tell me who the hell lives in 8-B." the Captain says as he prepares to walk away but just then Noah corrects him and says
"15-B..."
"What did you say kid?" asks the Captain. Everyone turns to Noah and he says
"I said 15-B, Captain"
"Okay, But why 15?" asks Beckett this time everyone else looks at him with an 'Exactly' look
"Well you guys said the victim was a Nanny on the 12 right?" he asks looking at Castle to which he answers
"Yes Noah, but why did you just say 15th floor?"
"Well, that's because that's how far the elevator will go in 37 seconds."
"What are you talking about Noah? Where are you getting 37 seconds from?" Beckett asks looking at him
"Well...okay...Hmm can you play the footage of Sara using the elevator the first time to go down? asks Noah to Esposito who looks for confirmation from the Captain who nods
Esposito then plays footage and Noah says looking at the footage "See she gets on the elevator to go down at 12:08:10 (hr: min: sec) and reaches the basement at 12:08:42."
"Yes but that's only 32 sec," Ryan says
"Yes, 32 sec correct now can please play the last time she comes down the elevator. Here she enters the elevator at 12: 48:05 and reaches the basement by 12: 48: 42 that's 37 seconds and so if calculate from the first time she goes to the basement we find that the elevator takes around 2.46 seconds to cover 1 floor and since the speed at which the elevator travels is constant in both cases we just divide 37 by 2.46 and we get 15.04, which is the 15th floor and hence I said 15," says Noah and smiles at them.
