Red Mark of Fate

"What's that smell?" Taiga asked her brusquely cutting her off. "What?" She could tell her brother was angry. This surprised her. He almost never got angry with her. What was his problem she thought. "Also where did you get this sweater. I don't remember ever seeing you wearing it." He asked again. Megumi could feel her heart beating out of her chest. She started to panic but quickly composed herself, putting on a poker face. "A friend let me borrow it okay, its not a big deal, get off my case." She said shrugging him off. But his grip on her arm got tighter. "No, that smell. It doesn't smell like Rin and I know you don't have any other friend's so who is it?" "What? Rude! I have other friends!" She said feeling offended, despite his words being the truth. " I swear to God Megumi, don't lie to me. Who gave this to you because the smell coming out of you is the scent of a prey, and a deer no less." Megumi cursed inwardly. She forgot how good her brother's sense of smell was. It almost rivalled her own. Megumi didn't bother trying to hide it, she couldn't lie to her brother anyway. "So what if it is? Where's the problem in that?" Her words seemed to anger her brother even more. "Where's the problem in that?! Megumi are you serious?" "Do you not realize how dangerous this is?" Megumi looked at him confused. Taira couldn't help sighing seeing how genuinely lost his sister was. "Having a deer's scent on you is a form of marking Megumi. It's a form of submission for wolves!" This revelation shocked Megumi almost beyond repair. "How can a wolf submit to its prey?!" In what world did that make sense? ************************************************************************************************** Megumi Ahane, born into a wealthy family and blessed with wolf genes resents the life she has to live. In a world where you are either prey or predator, Megumi finds herself in a conflicting position where she has to choose between rejecting the genes she was born with or giving in to fate. ************************************************************************************************** Note: This story takes place in a modern setting but has some fantastical elements to it. There are a couple of twists and turns as well as some betrayal but overall there's not too much toxicity between the protagonist and the male lead. This story is both short and sweet.

43. Oikomu = To corner

Monday had arrived and Megumi was dreading the day that laid ahead of her.

She couldn't get that stupid kiss out of her head, leaving her unable to sleep properly. And now she was going to have to face the reason for her sleepless nights at school today.

"Why is school even a thing?!" She wondered out loud.

"School is essential for the development of society." Uraume responded.

"Right. Society could go ahead and burn for all I care." She grumbled.

"If that were to happen, you would have much more to worry about than a silly kiss."

"Ugh, don't remind me."

She then got out of bed and got ready for the school.

Making her way inside the halls, Megumi placed her outdoor shoes in the cupboard and put on her indoors shoes. She did this as slow as she possibly could in order to stall.

She didn't know what kind of face she should make not only in front of Kanae but also in front of Rin.

He was perceptive as hell and would immediately notice that something was up with her. Megumi couldn't bring herself to lie to him again, not after what they had been through. But she sure as hell couldn't tell him what happened.

She would sooner die than tell her male best friend that her first kiss had been stolen away by a guy she wasn't sure she liked.

Okay. She had to be honest with herself. If that kiss served anything, it confirmed her confusing feelings for Kanae. She liked him and that terrified her.

She couldn't afford to have feelings for anyone right now especially not with Beaux around. Standing there, Megumi knew she needed to face the music, she didn't have a choice. It's not like she could ditch school.

Or maybe?

"Absolutely not child. You are to go to class now." Uraume reprimanded her.

Megumi let out a groan. Uraume was right. Even if she didn't go to school today, she would have to go tomorrow. On top of that, her parents would be alerted by the school if she didn't show and she would have to come up with a excuse as to why she decided to ditch.

Just thinking about it gave her a headache.

Megumi took a deep breath, and made her to class. Upon entering the classroom, she was greeted by Rin who had arrived only seconds before her.

Damn. Obstacle one has already appeared. Megumi took a deep breath, and regained her composure. She put on a blank face and greeted Rin.

Rin gave her a weird look. "What's up with you?" He asked her.

"Nothing." Is all she said before taking a seat. Rin followed closely behind and shrugged to himself.

Maybe she's having one of those days, he thought to himself.

Good. He's not asking any questions.

Megumi started to relax but soon went into a quiet panic. Entering the classroom was Kanae Ito, the boy she had feelings for.

Her heartbeat resounded loudly in her chest. Her face turned a light shade of pink and her knuckles turned white as she gripped her desk tightly.

Kanae passed her desk casting her a side glance before going to his seat at the front. That one glance was enough to make her explode.

If it wasn't for Uraume trying to calm her down, she probably would've ran for the hills by now.

Rin's eyes narrowed when looking at her strange behaviour. He looked between the two of them back and forth, confused.

Beaux finally arrived moments before the homeroom teacher entered the class. He sat at his desk and curiously cast a look towards Megumi and saw her abnormal behaviour. He too narrowed his eyes wondering what was going on.

He kept quiet, and decided he'd interrogate her later.

When the bell rang for lunch, Beaux and Rin accosted her before she could run away.

She cursed inwardly letting the two drag her away. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Kanae staring at her before looking away.

She felt a pang in her chest.

When the two found a less crowded hallway, they let her go, both looking at each other.

"Yo, are you good? You've been acting weirder than usual today." Rin interrogated her.

"What do you mean? I'm acting like my usual self."

"Yeah right. You've been stealing glances at Ito all morning, and every time you do, you start to blush like a school girl." Beaux remarked.

"What are you talking about? I've been focusing on school work the whole time." She said feigning ignorance.

Beaux narrowed his eyes at her. "Did something happen between you two?" He asked.

"Nothing happened between me and Kanae and I for one resent the implication."

"Right, well whatever it is that 'didn't' happen, make sure you keep it under wraps. You might think you're hiding it well, but you're not." Beaux warned.

Rin nodded his head in agreement. "Some people who are more perceptive will start to notice. Also I don't know why, but Hasegawa has been eyeing you guys for some time as well."

"Hasegawa?" Megumi asked perplexed.

Rin rolled his eyes at this.

"Yes Hasegawa, the snake girl!"

"Oh. Are you sure you're not just seeing things? What reason would she have to suspect anything?"

"I don't know but its better to be safe than sorry. Get it together Megumi."
