1 Unfortunate

I was walking from the gym to work as per usual in the morning. There was the old lady leaning out her window with a cigarette, the pretty woman covered in her puffy jacket walking her dog, Snatcher, in the opposite direction to him. They shared their ritualistic thin-lipped smile as they passed one another. Then came the five minute chat with old man Dustin who was coming back from the bakery.

everything was normal, except this time I heard a screech and shouts of warning mere moments after walking away from Dustin. I turned instinctually and found Dustin standing frozen in the middle of the road with a delivery van rolling towards him down the street and people dumbly chasing after it.

I moved, arriving next to Dustin just in time to push him out the way. Unfortunately for me though the corner of the van clipped the side of my head and I blacked out.

I don't know for how long I had been dead to the world, but I woke up in a chair in a purely grey space with about seven things sitting in a line before me.

"Ronald Mallory, you changed the date of an old man, but frankly that's our fault. We failed to foresee that you would notice in time to save him. in none of our simulations did you. As an apology for your undated death we have decided to send you to a random world of fiction with a few gifts as is standard protocol. You will retain your memories." one of the things said, I didn't have time to think much as a wheel appeared and he spun it. The wheel span for a while, and though I tried to ask what was going on, for some reason I couldn't speak. The wheel stopped and landed on Highschool DxD. Wasn't that an anime or something?

"Very well, we have deemed the following powers acceptable for you: True senses and mental immunity. Superhuman cognition and physique, with the caveat it will become stronger with effort. Life-energy manipulation. Whether or not you are born with innate abilities such as a sacred gear, high mana pool, or bloodline abilities is random, and how your gifted powers interact with them isn't under our control either." Another being said. "Goodbye, we hope you enjoy your new life Ronald Mallory."

And so I slept and woke once more, this time as a baby. from there my new life began, and as a baby I slowly came to terms with it.

I was reborn as Ronald Mallory, and my parents were well-off normal folk living in Britain. With nothing else to do as a baby I determinedly learned to control my life energy, condensing it to not seep out of me and willing it to enhance my development as I grew. developed a life-sense technique, as well as learning how to heal myself and others but that didn't really happen overnight. it wasn't until I'd turned seven I'd gotten that good. Even then it was in its infancy. I'd also realised that my controlled life energy seemingly lessened my presence, just enough to be passed over by everyone unless someone was specifically looking for me, expected me, or I'd made myself known.

I'd also show my smarts but my parents decided to keep me in school because while I showed my genius, getting multiple online degrees by the age of fourteen, they wanted me to stay in touch with kids my age. I didn't want to stand out too much. That was until I started topping people from being bullied and grew a 'violent' reputation, and hopped a few schools. Usually because the bullies I stopped were rich or important. And the one time I half beat a would be rapist to death... but that was a special case. Regardless, my parents, Thomas and Gretchen, were proud of me since they knew the circumstances, and never once we're upset about my behaviour. I cared deeply for them and my little sister Mave. I suppose having grown up once highlighted to me that I should care more for my family this time around. so, by the time I turned 17 I was a super-smart, super-strong person who relegated himself to high human levels who could manipulate life energy to an extreme degree, with enhancing, healing, hiding, sensing, influencing or interfering with others life energy and materialising the energy in the a form of spiritual water, I still didn't quite understand what it did or why. This also lead to me being able to manipulate water, though I hadn't fiddled around with it much since it was new.

I'd also developed a good poker face considering all the supernatural shit I pretended didn't exist, or lying about dealing with supernatural problems. Finally, it turned out I didn't have a sacred gear, but did have a superhuman ability of sorts. I called it Flow, because it made the control of my energy easier and allowed me to 'get into the flow' of things. I also didn't really understand it. Thusfar I'd gotten away with it. I was a sandy blonde haired kid with light sea blue eyes flecked with gold and purple, though it wasn't easily noticeable, and stood at 6'0'' and built with wide shoulders and lazy muscle, despite the work I put into it.

It was another normal morning when things changed. I was there eating cookie crisp cereal with my sister, who looked similar to me but with our dad's black hair and was only about 5'5''. In fact, dad's hair colour and a bit of his facial structure was all the two of us got from him, we took after mum a lot more with her height, eyes, and body-structure. I even got her hair.

"Hey Ron, make me up brownies tonight." Mave demanded.

"Make them yourself." I answered.

"But I have debate club then archery club, and you make better food." Mave pouted.

"Well I have to walk the dogs when we get back, and I'm on dinner tonight." I replied.

"So it shouldn't be too much to make brownies too." Mave nodded.

"Fine, but you're doing the laundry tomorrow." I offered.

"Deal." Mave smiled.

"Oh good, you're both here." Mum said as she and dad entered the kitchen. "Okay, this is abrupt but we're moving to Kuoh Town in Japan in a month, your father got a big promotion but for it we have to move. I bet you're glad he insisted on learning those languages now huh?" Mum kept talking even as she put bread in the toaster and got some water boiling for her eggs while dad just poured out some cereal for himself.

"You going to look for work there too mum?" Mave asked.

"Of course I am. Maybe as a free-lance mangaka, branch out from my writing a little. Or maybe I could be an editor. We'll see what happens." Mum smiled over her shoulder. Also, Ron, could you please try not to get kicked out at the next school. I'm not asking you to stop doing the right thing, just less damage and it should be fine, right hon?".

"Yup." Dad said over Mave's giggling. "Right, we'd better get a move on. To the car kids. See you later lovely."
