Zeng Wei carefully set Meiying down and proceeded towards Xuejian, as well as the other students gathered around.
"Why all this commotion?" he inquired, positioning himself in front of Xuejian with the intention of asking the students without acknowledging Xuejian's presence.
A student in the crowd pointed towards Xuejian, stating, "Mr. Wang, your predecessor, and Mrs. Wang's husband, visited our school." Zeng Wei already knew who this man was, as his interest in Meiying had grown since their meeting yesterday. He had even done some internet research about her, as asking Du Xinyi, who knew a lot about Meiying, would only raise suspicion.
"So, you're the infamous Mr. Wang," Zeng Wei commented, causing the whole crowd to tense up. However, Xuejian merely looked at Zeng Wei with amusement.
Meiying quickly understood that Xuejian wasn't angry with Zeng Wei; in fact, he seemed to like him. On the other hand, Zeng Wei regarded Xuejian as a threat.
Just then, the school bell rang, indicating that break time was over. All the students glanced at Zeng Wei, who in turn, with just a single glance, made them scurry back to their classes—except for Du Xinyi, who had somehow taken Yang Mei's phone and was recording the scene.
Yang Mei attempted to pull Du Xinyi away, but she refused to budge. So, Yang Mei ended up carrying her over her shoulder, rushing back to class alongside Shi Lin, while Du Xinyi protested loudly to be put down.
Zeng Wei then glanced back at Xuejian and motioned towards Meiying, saying, "I assume you came here for the same reason as her." Xuejian responded with a smile.
"Then come with me," Zeng Wei said as he walked away. Xuejian followed, while Meiying made up her mind to stay where she was. She wouldn't go with Xuejian because she was still angry with him, and it was better to wait for Zeng Wei. She still needed to talk to him.
Zeng Wei led Xuejian to the school director's office, where they were warmly welcomed. It appeared that Xuejian had already reached out to the director before his arrival.
They discussed the students' needs for the spring festival, which was Xuejian's intention, as he wanted to be a sponsor for the event. After a thorough discussion, Zeng Wei escorted Xuejian out of the office.
Deciding it was time to initiate a conversation, Xuejian spoke up first. "It's nice to see you again."
Zeng Wei narrowed his eyes, puzzled by Xuejian's statement. When had they met before? Sensing Zeng Wei's confusion, Xuejian quickly added that it had been a long time ago and that Zeng Wei probably wouldn't remember.
Standing so close that they could practically share breaths, Zeng Wei replied sternly, "I'm not interested in who you were in my past. But let it be known that I see you as my rival."
Xuejian smiled in response. "You've always been," he admitted.
Without another word, Zeng Wei turned and walked away, with Xuejian trailing behind him as they exited the school building. They spotted Meiying seated under the old tree, resting her head and dozing off.
Zeng Wei rushed to her side, gently blowing a breeze on her face to wake her up. Her eyes twitched in annoyance before finally fluttering open. Meiying found herself face to face with Zeng Wei, crouched down beside her, and Xuejian standing a short distance away.
Feeling somewhat embarrassed, Meiying stood up. "You seem tired. Why don't you go back home?" Zeng Wei suggested.
"But I need to... Never mind. Just give me your number. I'll call you when I need any information," Meiying replied, handing her phone to Zeng Wei.
Zeng Wei eagerly accepted the phone and quickly inputted his number before bidding Meiying farewell and heading back to his class, but not before glaring at Xuejian.
Meiying avoided being alone with Xuejian, but now she found herself standing with him, alone!
Xuejian took her hand and pulled her towards his car, while she struggled to break free. "You know, I came with my car too," Meiying said, hoping to change the situation.
"I know, I will call someone to pick it up," Xuejian replied calmly. Meiying sighed and reluctantly hopped into his car, biting her cheeks in annoyance.
Throughout the car ride, there was complete silence. Meiying didn't want to have a conversation with Xuejian, and he seemed equally disinterested in talking. However, when Xuejian parked the car in front of a hospital, Meiying couldn't contain her curiosity any longer.
"Why are we here?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. Xuejian ignored her question and forcefully pulled her out of the car and into the hospital building.
They entered an elevator and descended to a specific floor. Xuejian continued to drag Meiying along until they reached a spacious hospital room, which seemed to be a VIP room.
Meiying's eyes roamed around the room until they fell upon a familiar face - Feng Qingyun. Meiying stared at her in shock, then turned her gaze towards Xuejian. How could he?
There were others in the room too, Qingting and Qinghui. They all looked at her with anger, their mother had obviously filled them in on the details of what had transpired - her failed plan. Xuejian walked towards the woman's hospital bed and asked, "How are you feeling?"
"Better, dear, but... why did you bring the cause of my condition with you?" Qingyun frowned, visibly confused.
Xuejian smiled, and Meiying looked at him in disbelief. Did he genuinely believe this woman?
"Wang Xuejian, I don't know what you see in that woman, but considering the hardships my mother has endured, you should know by now that she's evil. You should file for a divorce. She doesn't deserve to be by your side," Qingting said, stepping closer to Xuejian, placing her hand on his shoulder in a show of support.
Meiying observed the room, her emotions stirring. She wouldn't be angry if he divorced her, but she would be devastated if he made that decision because of this wretched family.
"Brother Xuejian, please listen to them," Qinghui pleaded, his voice filled with concern.
Meiying had reached her limit. She couldn't bear to witness the familial chaos any longer. Feeling a surge of emotions, she stormed out of the hospital room and hastily entered the elevator before Xuejian could catch up to her. Meiying suspected that he had brought her there to apologize, but she refused to submit to them once again. She would rather face death than succumb to their manipulations.
Meanwhile, Li Chenwei had just exited the hospital building and made his way towards his car. Falling ill had prevented him from taking care of himself, and in the past, he would have relied on Xiaoxiao to assist him. However, since their breakup, he didn't want to give her false hope and had been forced to take care of himself.
As he prepared to drive away, a woman suddenly stepped onto the road, obstructing his path. Chenwei immediately slammed on the brakes, bewildered by her actions. "Hey, miss! Are you crazy? You nearly got yourself killed!" he exclaimed, frustration evident in his voice.
The woman spoke softly, but her words rang clear to Chenwei's ears. "That's a lot better than living. Besides, I was destined to die anyway," she murmured.
Chenwei was taken aback. It was clear the woman needed help. He approached her, turning her face towards him as her hair concealed her features. As he gently lifted her head, his eyes widened in surprise. It was Wang Meiying.
Meiying also recognized Chenwei, despite the face mask covering his features. "Li Chenwei," she breathed, tears streaming down her face.
Uncertain of what to do, Chenwei sensed the urgency of the situation, aware that paparazzi could be lurking nearby. In a swift decision, he offered her refuge in his car and swiftly drove away from the hospital.
Meiying felt a deep sense of gratitude for encountering Chenwei. It felt as though fate was trying to show her that she had one person she could live for, one person who understood and cared for her - Li Chenwei. He was the man she had almost married, the man who had given her hope for a better life, the man who loved her unconditionally despite her past.
Chenwei stole a glance at Meiying, noticing that her tears had ceased flowing. However, her earlier words lingered in his mind, stirring a sense of familiarity within him. He had once been in a similar situation and understood the importance of having someone by your side to provide unwavering support and encouragement.
A pang of concern washed over him as he wondered about Meiying's husband. Did he comprehend the depth of her emotions? Did he even know how she was truly feeling? An invisible tension gripped Chenwei as his hands tightened around the steering wheel, guiding them to a halt outside Meiying's mansion.
It was time for Chenwei to have a direct conversation with that man, face to face.
Finally, face on.
