3 Chapter 3

Lily and her new partner chimchar could be seen traversing route 202, heading towards Jubilife city. They had merely been walking for a couple of hours before Lily found a somewhat secluded clearing among the trees.

"What do you say chimchar? Ready to get stronger?" Lily asked her pokemon.

"Chim chimchar!" Cheered the pokemon before jumping off her shoulder to stand in front of her.

"Alright chimchar. Im going to check your moveset with the pokedex so that I know what we can work on." Lily told her partner while bringing out said machine.

Chimchar just nodded in acceptance since he too, wanted to become stronger. Lily pointed her pokedex towards chimchar and started the scan.

[Chimchar: the Chimp Pokémon. Chimchar easily climbs the sheerest of walls and lives on mountain tops. When it sleeps, its flames go out.]

"Nice to know that you wont accidentally set my tent on fire." She stated with a teasing smirk, making the pokemon roll his eyes.

[This chimchar is male and has the ability Blaze, which powers up fire-type moves when their health is low .

This chimchar knows the moves: Leer, scratch and ember.]

Lily pondered for a moment. She mostly thought about how to go about training chimchar in a few moves, but mostly how to strengthen the already known moveset.

"Alright chimchar." Lily spoke, gaining chimchars attention.

"First off is leer. Leer allows for you to lower the opponents defence, which is good if you plan on using physical attacks of which you only have scratch for now." She said. Chimchar just nodded at her assesment.

"Next is scratch, which is pretty straightforward." Again chimchar just nodded.

"Finally we have ember. Ember is known to be the weakest fire-type move, but if we do things right, then we can make ember grow stronger and stronger until you are ready for flamethrower." And again, chimchar just nodded at his trainer.

"So first off is your physical power. For the next few days, we are staying here on route 202. During this time, I want you to start with some weight training. We can use some rocks and anything really, that we can find." Chimchar nodded eagerly.

"After your physical training each day, we will work on your moves, such as strength and accuracy for scratch and firepower for your ember. Are you with me?" She spoke with great enthusiasm which was quickly mirrored by chimchar.

"Then lets start!" Cried out Lily.

- Timeskip -

Chimchar was panting hard while laying on the ground.

It had already been two whole days since they set up camp in the clearing. Not a lot had happened during this time except training, and training hard. But chimchar didnt complain since he knew this training was the way for him to become stronger.

One thing that happened was that they had gotten a new member on their team on the first day of training. He had come to their camp due to the smell of food, to which Lily had made a deal with the new pokemon.

- Flashback -

Lily was currently cooking some food for herself and chimchar when they heard some rustling from the nearby bushes which got both their attention. Chimchar quickly got into position in case they were attacked, but soon realized it wasnt needed.

From the bushes came a small pokemon. It was a small grey bird.

It started to hop towards where the smell of food came from, aka. Lily. When Lily saw the pokemon approach her, she got an idea.

"Hey there starly." She spoke softly so she wouldnt startle the small pokemon. Starly stopped in its tracks and looked up towards her face.

"Are you hungry? Is that why you came out?" She asked, still with a soft tone in her voice.

"Star, star, starly." Responded the tiny bird while nodding at her questions.

"Why dont we make a deal then?" She asked, which got the attention of both pokemon in her vicinity.

"You see, Im a new trainer that started just yesterday." She began while having the full attention of the two pokemon.

"And while Im sure that I can train chimchar well enough to become a true powerhouse one day, I still need more pokemon on my team. So if you are willing to, I would want you to join us on our journey. What do you say?"

Starly observed her for a while before finally raising a wing in the direction of chimchar.

"Star, starly!" It cried out.

"You want a battle with chimchar first?" She asked, to which she received a nod.

"Okay then. Chimchar, lets do this!" She called out.

Chimchar got into position on one end of the clearing, while starly took to the other side.

"Okay then, lets do this. Chimchar, start us off with a leer!" Said Lily.

"Chiiim!" Cried out chimchar while using said move.

Starly momentarily froze as it felt its defence being lowered. It didnt last long though, since it quickly reacted and flew into the air. Starlys wings started to glow a whitish-blue color as it started to descend towards chimchar with a wing attack.

"Quickly dodge the attack and prepare to launch an ember at its back." Commanded Lily.

As starly was nearing chimchar, he quickly rolled to the right while a small flame could be seen charging up in his mouth.

Before starly was able to stop itself and turn around, chimchar had positioned himself at the opponents back, still with the flame in his mouth.

"Now, fire!" Called Lily.

Chimchar followed the command and fired the now ready ember from its mouth. But ember, being known as the weakest fire-type move, was far to slow to hit starly before the flying-type used quick attack to dodge the fire.

"Chimchar, once again prepare an ember as you fight close with scratch."

Hearing his trainers command, he kept his mouth closed while preparing the ember. He quickly used the tiny window of opportunity to rush starly who just came out of its quick attack. He jumped into the air while the tips of his fingers started to glow white signalling his scratch attack.

Starly managed to dodge a few times, but on the third scratch attack, chimchar finally managed to hit the flying pokemon, bringing it to the ground with a cry.

"Now, chimchar!" She called out.

Chimchar heard the order and immediatly fired its ember right at the downed pokemon. Starly was unable to dodge this time, and was hit on its chest.

Once Lily saw starly was down, she brought out one of her pokeballs, enlarged it, and finally threw the ball at the wild pokemon.

The trainer and her pokemon stood and waited anxiously for the confirmation of the capture. The ball wiggled once....

Then twice.....

And finally, after the third wiggle came the sound they had been waiting for.

"DING!"

The two let out a breath of air they didnt even know they held in before looking towards eachother and grinning from ear to ear.

"Chimchar..... You do know we just won our first fight together, right?" Lily asked, still having the grin on her face.

"Chim, chimchar!" Chimchar answered while also having that grin plastered on his face.

They stood still for a moment before, starting to laugh loudly.

They had barely been together for a day and they had just had their first battle and victory at the same time.

- Present time -

After they had managed to capture starly, they had spent the night resting and recuperating after their fight.

Once morning came, however, it was back to training. Chimchar continued his strengthening of his physical body, while starly had rocks tied to each wing, strengthening them while simultaniously working on his speed while on the ground in case someone managed to damage his wings.

Lily had checked starlys pokedex entry before they started, but there wasnt much different from what she had expected.

[Starly: the Starling Pokémon. Starly normally travels in a flock, but when alone, it is hard to notice.

This starly is male and has the ability Keen eyes.

His moveset is Growl, tackle, quick attack and wing attack.]

After they had woken up that morning, she had immediatly explained how many would target a flying-types wings so that they can take away their fighting capabilities, which made starly a bit scared since to him, his wings meant his life, but Lily quickly explained that, thats why they would be working hard so that they could avoid that scenario.

While the two pokemon trained hard, Lily had st herself down against a nearby tree with a notebook in her hands.

`Training has only just started, but I have a feeling that I would need a better training regiment once they start to get too used to the current one.´ She thought while tapping her pen against her chin.

`While chimchar would have a somewhat good chance at the first gym once he learns some more moves, starly is a bit harder since he cant learn steel wing like pidgeys. But if we can manage to train hard and get enough experience before then, we might be able to evolve them both. Staravia still wont be able to learn a steel move, but this way, we would have a much better chance at winning the first gym.´

She kept thinking hard and noting down any thought or idea that she would get regarding their training, but she would erase almost as much as she wrote.

This went on for a few hours, two pokemon training, and a trainer working on how to train them better.

When lunch finally rolled around, she called them both and gave them their food, to which they quickly started to dig in. While they were eating, Lily finally spoke.

"I think that we should start to head on towards the next city from tomorrow."
