Her Father

Playing with the cereals on the bowl, Evelyn swung her feet while being seated on the chair and asked, "Can I not go to school?"

At the age of fourteen, Evelyn didn't want to interact with bunch of kids who could hardly speak properly and go through those boring lessons.

Her mother shot her a worried gaze.

"What's wrong with school? Aren't you always eager to go to school? Did anyone trouble you? If there is anyone troubling you, let me know about it. Mom will take care of them for you, my baby."

Her mother's voice hardened at the end.

"No, no one troubled me."

Evelyn sank into her seat, deflating. There was really no avoiding going to school when she could have been doing something better.

Her mother extended her hand and touched her forehead.

"Are you still feeling sick?"

Evelyn's doe eyes were raised to look at her mother before the question left her lips.

"Mom, do I have a father?"

Evelyn never asked her mother about a father. That's why, the question caught the woman off guard. On the other hand, Evelyn wanted to test her mother to figure out how the woman felt about her father.

Amelia fell silent.

Looking at those eyes of Evelyn sparkling with anticipation, Amelia wasn't sure of how to answer.

That cruel man— there was never a day when she didn't think of him.

Regardless of what he did, he was imprinted in her mind.

"Of course, you do."

Evelyn asked, "Where is my father then?"

A strained smile appeared on Amelia's face as she gently answered, "Your father, he is really busy. That's why, you don't get to see him. But one day, he will come home. Hmm?"

Evelyn nodded.

Her mother was working on her laptop while sitting on the couch. At the same time, Evelyn was given her tablet to play with.

Glancing at her mother once, she changed the cartoon playing to a browser and searched for the name Daniel Wright. Along with it she attached his profession, cardiologist, in order to narrow the searches.

Although her biological father wasn't a public figure, he had lots of achievements piled up. Due to this, he was a renowned figure in the field. As she went through the webpages, she hardly found anything useful until her eyes paused on one.

He was giving a lecture tomorrow at an university here.

Relief spread through her to learn that her father was in this state.

That's right.

She planned to look for this man to protect her mother. Although he hurt her mother a lot and didn't deserve the woman, in the end, she felt helpless. Only he could protect her at this point.

Moreover, the pain he felt at the end when he personally took his life resonated through her. She didn't want him to fall into depression and hurt himself.

After all, at the end, his blood ran through her.

And a part of her wanted to have a dad.

It made her envious when she saw the other children have a complete family. Maybe she was being too greedy, but still, she wanted to experience it. She wanted to be loved by both of her parents.

Her mother was enough for her.

But having a father who adored her sounded better to Evelyn.

Nonetheless, more than gaining affections, her concern was her mother.

She then fell into a dilemma.

How will she be sneaking out?

Staring down at her body, a groan escaped from her lips.

Why did she have to be so small?
