The Defence of the Village

After a night fraught with battle and a morning spent traveling, Eliss and Amukelo finally reached the city of Torvill. The usually bustling trade city now resembled a fortress more than a lively urban center.

Stone walls stood tall and imposing, with barricades hastily erected at every entrance, turning inviting pathways into defensible chokepoints. Guards, clad in the distinctive deep blue and gold of Torvill, patrolled the streets with a mix of determination and exhaustion in their eyes.

The city, known for its vibrant markets and grand architecture, was now tense and subdued. Elegant stone buildings with ornate carvings, which once hosted merchants selling exotic goods, were now eerily quiet. The normally vibrant central square, framed by statues of historic heroes, was instead filled with makeshift training areas for the city's hastily assembled militia.

Walking through the streets, Eliss couldn't help but feel the weight of the city's apprehension. "It's like the whole city is holding its breath," she whispered to Amukelo.

He nodded, his keen eyes scanning the surroundings. "They're preparing for something big," he replied softly. "We need to find out what's going on, and how we can help."

As evening approached, they decided that the best place to gather information would be the local pub—a spot where town news was as commonly served as ale. The atmosphere inside was a stark contrast to the city's anxious streets. Here, people were gathered, trying to enjoy a moment of respite, but their anxious glances towards the door betrayed the unease that lay beneath.

As they were settling into their meal, a tall, battle-hardened woman walked through the entrance. Her presence commanded attention; her cloak bore the emblem of Torvill. She scanned the room briefly before her eyes fixed on Eliss and Amukelo.

Approaching their table, she introduced herself as Captain Lyria. "I couldn't help but notice your gear," she began, nodding towards Eliss's staff and Amukelo's sword. "You both carry yourselves like fighters. I have a proposition, but I must warn you—it's extremely dangerous."

As they listened, Captain Lyria explained the dire situation in Torvill and the surrounding areas. "Every village around here is under threat," she said, her voice edged with frustration. "We simply don't have the manpower to protect them all."

"We need someone to defend the village of Larenth," Lyria continued. "We have reinforcements on the way, but they won't arrive for another three days. I'm asking for your help to hold the line until then. You would be the only line of defense for that village, so I understand completely if you choose not to accept this responsibility."

Eliss exchanged a glance with Amukelo.

The weight of the responsibility was palpable, but so was their determination. "We'll do it," Amukelo said firmly.

Captain Lyria's stern expression softened into one of relief. "Thank you," she breathed. "Larenth is a day's ride to the west. I'll have horses prepared for you."

. . .

The following morning, as the first light of dawn painted the city of Torvill in a soft, golden hue, Amukelo and Eliss stood at the city gates, prepared and ready for their journey to Larenth Village. Their equipment was checked and double-checked, their bags full with potions, food, and necessary supplies.

As they waited for the gates to be opened, Amukelo turned to Eliss with a playful smirk on his face. "Eliss," he began, "promise me something."

"What is it?" she replied, curious, her blue eyes reflecting the early morning light.

"That you'll will be able to take care of yourself, I don't want will wait for us." he said, with a soft tone.

Eliss nooded. "I will," Her face full of determination. "Just watch me, this time I'll be the one saving you."

Amukelo laughed warmly, seeing her determination the tension of the upcoming task seeming to ease a bit. "I'll be counting on it," he said sincerely, his tone even softer now.
