58 Judgement of the Undead

The air was thick with palpable tension as our man reached the deserted floor's elevator.

But as he was about to press the call button, an inexplicable shiver ran down his spine.

His instinct had never failed him.

In an almost supernatural movement, he lunged to the side just in time to see a bullet whiz where his head had been a second ago. His heart pounded, not with fear, but with confusion.

"How could I have let a survivor slip through?" he wondered.

He spun around abruptly, his steel eyes scanning the area for his assailant.

What he saw then froze him in place.

There, lying among the lifeless bodies, one of the guards he had neutralized earlier held a gun tightly in his grotesquely dislocated hand.

Without hesitation, the mutilated body rose and opened fire again. But our man was not one to be caught off guard twice. With agility defying logic, he dodged the bullets, one after another, while closing in on his assailant.
