The backlash from using this particular high level item is that it has to absorb all the impact that comes from the multiple attacks. Much like a gun's recoil.
So, it will break down after taking enough hits like that. But that is enough.

Ivar swung his axe again as he lunged at Gawk. While Icarus moved like a flash of light as he tailed Gawk who already shifted into his shadow form. Gawk is light on his feet and he floated in the air like a feather.
Ivar did have some trouble catching up to him, particularly when their cultivation levels are this far apart.
However, Icarus didn't have that type of struggle. After all, he did learn from Gawk and knew many things about how he fights. So, he managed to keep himself at the tail of Gawk and he helped Ivar get enough chances to deal the damage.
