1 Scholarship girl

I was at home with my parents this evening watching the news. To be candid I don't really find it fun watching the news but this time it was totally different, I had to cause my future or probably my dreams depends on it.

"Oh"! I forgot to introduce myself properly. Am Gabriella! Gabriella Martins to be precise but you can call me Gabby. Don't even think it's sounds cool cause I'm not from a wealthy home so it's no use having a nickname when you're not from a wealthy home anyways, my mom and dad are struggling to survive, while my mom runs a coffee shop my dad owns a little shabby laundry house and I happen to be their only daughter. you might be wondering why on earth am watching the news all of a sudden when I don't find it fun, well like I said my future depends on it . I'm a student of "Rose High school" but I just don't find the school conducive and suitable for learning, of course it's for the middle class parents who doesn't have enough money to send their children to a bigger school and of course it's wasn't my dream to attend such a school but I had to cause of my background you see. But all of a sudden my life story began to change. one day I was returning from school when I over heard some students talking about a scholarship exam into "RAY LAKE HIGH SCHOOL" the most expensive school in New York city but mostly the kids there are all basically from a wealthy home. I thought of sitting for the exam but my family background discouraged me, I didn't know what to do so I confide in my Chemistry teacher who told me

"You're a very intelligent student your background doesn't stops you from giving that exam a trial Miss Martin, besides it's a scholarship, who knows you might win and you know what happens when you win"? she asked looking at me with a warm expression on her face

"No" I replied innocently looking at her with my big eye balls

"If you happen to win, your parents wouldn't have to pay a dim to see you through high school anymore" she said smiling broadly. I got motivated by her word and had to put a lot of effort into my studies,I got tutors from my teachers in school, stayed for extra classes, I sometimes read at my mom's coffee shop even in my bathroom "hahaha" funny right? I had no choice left. Two months after, I sat for the scholarship exam which lasted for 45 minutes, there was some kind of pressure on that day cause I was really scared if I'm gonna pass but I did my best and wrote the exam, though I was very anxious and nervously had sweats on my palm. Well today which happens to be two weeks after the exams happens to be the day the results would be announced and the winner declared and I'm really anxious and eager to know who it gonna be. You know no matter whom it is would be lucky and blessed to attend such a high school, it's gonna be a dream come true. Well let's listen properly the winner is about to be declared come on let's listen together as friends.

"it would be a honour to announce this year's scholarship winner for Ray Lake high school dreamers". The announcer said wearing a smile and I got even more anxious and broke into a sweat even when the weather was cold

"The winner of this year's scholarship goes to Miss Gabriella Martins and not just that,her performance was so good that Ray lake has volunteered to further her education to the university level"!He said happily as be softly spoke to the media

"What the heck"?! I gasped as my eyes flickered in surprise, I turned to my parents in amazement and saw them both looking surprised and confused at me, "Me"? How's this even possible"? "Oh my Gosh! I'm so happy" I said to myself with tears in eyes I looked up and saw my parents looking at me in a shocked state but believe me they are the happiest people on earth today, me too and of course I deserved the scholarship anyways after all the reading and most of all reading in the bathroom isn't that ridiculous? Oh the news man still on T.V

"The necessary information and everything you need would be brought to your door step through the mail man of Ray Lake high school, once again Congratulations Miss Martins"! He said and another news popped up.

"Congratulations Gabby" my parents said to me and embraced me after a while we got disengaged from the hug "I'm so happy and proud of you my princess" my mom said with tears streaming down from her eyes to her pretty cheeks. I was about to say something when someone knocked at the door and my dad went to get it opened while I helped my mom wipe her tear.

"It's a delivery"! my dad said walking in with with some luggages in his hands, I quickly ran to him and helped him open one of the suite case and to my amazement in it were various types and colors of Ray Lake high school uniforms and they were as beautiful and noble as the school appears.

"That was fast" I said to myself

"It's a noble school darling, guess they've had everything sorted before making the announcement, which proves the delivery guy was close by waiting for orders" my dad said and I smiled while nodding in agreement

"Oh mine,thy are beautiful"I exclaimed happily hugging the dress

"What are you doing Gabriella? This uniforms are just as noble as Ray Lake's and it's probably customized and you must handle it with love and care cause we won't be able to afford it's kind if anything happens to it" my dad said, grabbed the uniform from me and walked out no doubt he's going to his dry cleaning shop cause he thought I ruined the dress already.

"Well my darling Gabby! you need to get some sleep and enough rest by the way it's late already and don't worry about your dad he will be back in any minute now". she said and pushed me towards my room, I walked in smiled at her shut my door and jumped on my bed and played with my teddy after some while I set on my timey which is my alarm clock so as to wake up early for school and luckily it worked. first thing in the morning I woke up as early as I could got off my bed and dressed it as usual then went into the bathroom and did what I was supposed to do to keep clean,I walked to my shabby closet when I came out of the bathroom all clean and dry in search of my uniform

"oh I forgot dad had it"I quickly rushed down to dad's room,he wasn't there but my uniform was neatly laid on his bed so I picked it up as gently as I could to avoid getting it rumpled and rushed back to my room got in it, picked up my backpack then walked out of my room, I walked to the dining to take my breakfast and luckily it was ready but my parents wasn't there so I thought of stealing a spoonful of rice pudding and just as I was about putting it in my mouth I got hit on my hand and the rice pudding spilled on the table, no doubt it was my mom

"Mom"I called in a disappointed tone cause I didn't succeed in stealing a spoonful of pudding that was all I wanted

"What do you mean"mom"! How would you want to eat such a heavy meal this morning"?! She said looking me straight in the eyes. I was kinda surprised she said that this morning but I knew what she was hitting at ..."but mom just this once won't make me gain a lot of weight" I said in a sulking tone

"of course it would, you know I learned Ray lake is for rich kids and I bet you would get admired by one of the rich boys,I know for sure the rich don't like fatty girls and I don't want you adding a lot of weight, besides you models aren't supposed to gain a lot of weight"she said smiling broadly at me, I sighed deeply cause I knew she was looking out for me. I want and hope to be a model in future and I'm working towards that dream, but on the contrary, I was speechless over my mom's words cause I thought I kinda knew what she was hitting at, but I was completely wrong,I shrugged took a cup of tea and four slice of bread and ate without saying a word to anyone, even my dad was there watching my mom ridicule me in such a way this morning and didn't say a word rather he just stood at a corner and watched with a broad smile on his face. When I was done eating I headed towards the door, but was stopped by my dad's word

"the bicycle is outside the house by the corner,do take care of yourself and don't get into trouble"he said and I turned back to see him smiling at me, tears fought it's way through my eyes, by the look of things I could sense my parents were happy and proud of me..."I won't dad, thanks"I said with a reassuring smile and left the house on top of the bike. I got to the school about fifteen minutes later and was welcomed by a magnificent building which looked so much like a glass castle,I moved closer to make my way into the building through the gate but the media was there just by the gate side, as soon as they saw me they started taking pictures of me, immediately they saw me they started taking pictures of me I was surprised but at the same time I played Cool by placing a smile on my face and started walking through them but Got stopped all of a sudden by one of the media's

"miss Gabriella! can you please tell us how you were able to secure such a ranking scholarship in the city"? one of the media asked me I wanted to speak but was short of words but being a brave girl and being addressed by the media for the very first time in my life I had to give in my best to it right ? I asked myself I was still in a daze

"Miss" she addressed me

"Oh sorry! uhm...I wouldn't say it was difficult but it was cause I had to read it every single thing called book that was related to the scholarship,I read at home,got extra tutors from my teachers in Rose high School, I read at my mom's coffee shop and sometimes in my bathroom but most of all knowing where I was coming from and what I want in life and how I wanted my future to be like 'boom' I had to give in a lot of effort to secure what I wanted for my future, though I wasn't expecting such a big scholarship but I hope to make the best out of it and make my parents more proud of me moreover I know I don't really belong to this kind of world I said looking at the building and knowing the kind of status here I just hope I fit in"I said with tears streaming down my cheeks "I should take my leave now". I added holding unto my bike tightly

"Thanks for your time Miss Martins"the media said showing a beautiful smile

"Welcome ma'am" I replied and quickly went into the school with my bike, I got a safe place to get it packed and with the address from the luggage yesterday I was able to locate the headmistress office who led me to my class and had me introduced to the students there who just stared at me scornfully

"Look at her, she looks so much like where she comes from"one of the girls said and the rest laughed

"Maybe I should talk to my parents to get her as a maid for me"another added

"That's enough" Mrs Maurice the headmistress said to them and they quietened down
