Chapter 14: Eastern Palace

I looked at the moon again. It is funny to realize how oblivious may it seem to the idea that two childhood friends were relying for its light during one of these rare nights of freedom.

Marcial leaned in closer. I could feel his deep breathing. I looked away. His matcha breath was getting stronger too.

Suddenly, my memories of loneliness when he left me behind before were now emerging. I remembered how I cried on my pillow for the whole night the day he left. I remembered how I used to stare at the backyard while calling out his name. I remembered waiting at the front porch steps for him to come home.

“Why didn’t you return? Why didn’t you even visit, Marcial?” I asked him, still looking away. Years of harbored resentment has finally haunted us both.

He held my hand. I turned to him, tears falling down my cheeks.
