Chapter 18

“I figure I can’t change society, but what I can do is be true to myself. I know what the right thing to do is, and I’m going to do it, never mind that I’m one of the few who doesn’t look after their own interests first.” Rory shook his head. “After what I’ve been through, I’m never going to assume anyone’s innocent ever again.”

Stella frowned. “Not even children.” In her experience, everyone thought that children were innocent and needed protecting.

“You see this?” The Ranger moved aside the hair on the right side of his face.

In the blue glow of the light, she studied his face and saw a scar she hadn’t really noticed before, thanks to the veil of hair normally hanging in front of it. The white scar ran from his hairline down to his cheekbone, going straight though his eye. That’s when she realized his eyes were different colours; the one on the right, the damaged one, was green.

“Quite the impressive souvenir you’ve got there,” she said.
