Chapter 231

It was perhaps the roughest waking up I'd done yet.

My eyelids felt as though they'd been left disconnected from the rest of my eyeball so they could dry in the air and every part of me moved like lead. I could feel a weight across my stomach and legs like someone had their own arm and leg over me.

My eyes did eventually open and my head listened well enough to moving, so I got the pleasant thrill of seeing Gus's sleeping face on the pillow next to mine. The bed we laid in had soft, white sheets and a fluffy, blue blanket. Sheer curtains covered my view from seeing much farther than the bed.

I bullied my heavy limbs into turning beneath the arm and leg Gus had flung over me. I tried to talk, but my throat was too dry to do more than rasp.

That rasp was enough to make Gus's silver eyelashes flutter.
