The Next Sunrise

The next morning, Prue was sitting and reading a book about poetry and started reading the poem out, forgetting that she wasn't alone anymore.

"This morning sun isn't the same as it used to be

Even though it still warms me as the world turns cold for its arrival

Your love made it warmer

Even though you're gone

I sit here watching the sun radiate its glow

And its warm colours across the sky..."

Prue sighed, remembering her husband who had passed away from cancer when Alina was only twelve years old, and how they used to wake up and watch the sunrise together every day before he would go to work.

She continued reading.

"I still feel your presence with me

As if you were here in spirit to continue our tradition

Your love continues to warm me

But not in the same way

I hope you've found peace"...

"As you deserve to feel happy

No matter where you are

No matter the circumstances of your death"

Alina finished the poem for her mother in a soothing voice, as Prue starts crying. Prue had written this poem as a tribute to her late husband. But as you see poetry isn't her strong suit, but she sent it in as an entry to a writing contest for it to be in a poetry book. She had won as you can see. And since she won, she also got the book for free as her work is in the novel.

Alina had bought the book herself without Prue's knowledge because she wanted to be able to quote it to her mum when she got the chance, and coincidently, the first time they had seen each other in person in over five years. She knew Prue would be awake for the sunrise as she always was. After all, it is tradition for her and the best way to stay connected to Lucian.

"How do you know that poem?" Confusion in Prue's voice.

"Mum, I actually have a copy of the book your poem is in, I even memorised dad's poem for you. After all, I know you wrote it for him." Pride and sympathy in Alina's voice.

Prue looked at Alina with more motherly love than before as the confusion faded away. Even though they had been sitting there for an hour, coffee in hand, more words were shared in their silence than there were spoken. Love, affection, understanding, happiness and growth. All shared between the two as they remembered Lucian, a loving husband and father, whom Alina idolised as a child and Prue loved with all her heart, mind and soul.
