18 Chapter 18

“So? What exactly happened?” Shravan asked wearily, seeing an agitated Mithran pacing to and fro in his cabin

Mithran muttered something incoherable under his breath.

“Will you stop pacing like this? I am getting a headache” Shravan said impatient

“The damn woman switched her phone off. How childish” Mithran muttered angrily

“What did you do that drove her away?” Shravan asked

“Why does it have to be something done by me?” Mithran asked angrily

Shravan maintained a diplomatic silence.

“She simply walked out” Mithran said

“So? She woke up today morning and decided to walk out on you out of the blue?” Shravan asked

Mithran looked away awkwardly

“Why are you bothered anyways. It’s not as if she means anything to you?” Shravan asked, raising an eyebrow at him

“Remember Drishti walking out on you in the first week after your marriage? Remember how panicked you were?” Mithran asked mockingly

“That is different. From the first day, I was smitten. I admit that now. What is your excuse?” Shravan asked

“Definitely not smitten” Mithran said with a scoff

“Then what is bothering you?” Shravan asked

“Well, what will I say if my father calls and asks. I will have no answer. And I don’t want to give him any stress now.” Mithran came up with the perfect excuse and mentally patted his back for his quick thinking.

“Okay. She might have gone somewhere. She will come back” Shravan said

“Excuse me, Mr Maheswari? Mr Reddy is on call. Shall I connect the call to you?” Anjali, the receptionist asked

“Yeah. Connect him” Shravan said

Mr Reddy is one of the shareholders in their company.

“What does he want now?” Mithran asked in irritation. The old man is as irritating as his daughter.

“Who knows?” Shravan shrugged casually

The phone in Shravan’s cabin buzzed

“Put it on speaker” Mithran said and Shravan did as he said

“Good morning, Mr Reddy. How are you doing?” Shravan asked politely

“Is it true that Mithran got married? I couldn’t connect to him. His phone keeps saying it is busy?” Mr Reddy asked, without wasting time in pleasantries

“Uh Mr Reddy..”

“My daughter is crying her heart out. Why did he give her hope if he had no intention to marry her?” Mr Reddy asked angrily

Mithran looked at the phone in disbelief

The old man is as disillusioned as his daughter..

“Mr Reddy…”

“I don’t want to listen to this anymore. I want to pull out of your company right now. I don’t want to work for such immoral people anymore” the old man said angrily and hung up the call without waiting for their response.

“What the hell? Is he crazy?” Mithran asked in disbelief

“How did Tanya come to know about your marriage? I thought you guys were keeping it under the wraps” Shravan asked, not much bothered by Mr Reddy’s threat.

They are financially stable enough to let go of a ten percent shareholder.

“Well, she showed up at my apartment in the morning” Mithran said, without meeting his eyes

“Ah! I see. And I imagine some sort of scene occurred there that drove Chaahat out of there” Shravan said and Mithran explained everything

“I don’t understand you, Mithran. You are so hell bent on never accepting the marriage. And you go ahead and do something on contrary” Shravan said

“There is nothing like that. I was just annoyed. That’s all” Mithran said

When Mithran reached home that evening, Chaahat was already there. And she was looking as cool as a cucumber. And that made Mithran all the more furious.

“Why did you switch off your phone, Chaahat?” He asked angrily

“I didn’t realise that I have to explain all my actions to you” Chaahat said neutrally

“What exactly is your problem?” Mithran snapped

“My question exactly” Chaahat countered

Mithran took deep breaths to control his fury. The whole day, he had been trying to reach her through the phone. It was switched off the entire time. And when she finally switched it on, she refused to attend his call. And when he tracked her location through her number, he found that she had reached home. And he immediately left the office.

“My problem is that, you are an unwanted responsibility, thrust into my life by my father” Mithran said viciously

“I am nobody’s responsibility, Mr Yadav. I can take care of myself. I have been doing that for years” Chaahat said

“Well, whether you agree or not, you are my responsibility for the next three months.” Mithran said

Chaahat simply shrugged her shoulders, conveying that it doesn’t matter to her in any way.

“Appa called. He wants to meet us. Are you ready to leave now?” Mithran asked

“Is Uncle Madan alright?” Chaahat asked

“Yes. He just wants to see us. Come down. I will wait for you in the lobby” Mithran said and walked out of the apartment.

He brought his motorcycle to the lobby and waited for Chaahat to come.

Chaahat walked out of the apartment building and stopped dead on her tracks seeing Mithran sitting on a motorcycle.

All blood drained from her face and she felt like all the air got sucked out of her body.

She felt someone reaching into her ribcage and squeezing her heart hard.

Mithran saw Chaahat staring at him as if she saw a ghost. She had gone all pale.

“What is it? What happened?” He asked worriedly, as he got down from his bike and walked towards her.

He noticed that she was trembling and her breathing had gone irregular and faster.

“Chaahat?” he called out softly and held her trembling body in his arms.

“No.. No.. Please don’t go..” Chaahat was mumbling to herself. She was looking dazed and Mithran understood that she was lost in some other world.

He held her tightly in his embrace for a long while, waiting for her tremors to subside. He had no idea what he was supposed to do. He recognised a panic attack and he knew though they appear scary, they are not dangerous.

So he simply held her and murmured soothing words in her ears.

“It’s okay darling. I am here” he mumbled and felt her sagging against his chest and going limp.
