How many does it take to win a fight?

They arrived at the training grounds outside. It looked like a normal courtyard except for the targets. The principal spoke up, "okay, we specially made these targets to be way stronger than their predecessors, so you can go all out. Except for you.". He pointed at Filia. "We don't know how to prevent them being destroyed by you, so please use normal magic." Filia blushed slightly at this comment. It wasn't her fault she was this strong.

They walked up to the chalk line drawn around 25 meters from the dummies. They each started firing random spells at their targets. Each one having enough power to kill several people, and wound many more. Filia didn't know what spells to use. If she used too much power she would be scolded, but if she used too little she would look weak. After several seconds passed she thought of one she could both control and could deal some damage. She closed her eyes and cupped her hands in front of herself. Noticing this the others mentally prepared themselves to run. A small ball of light started to appear in her palms. After a few seconds she opened her eyes and the light shot forward towards the target in around a diameter of around one centimeter. The dummy started glowing and left scorch marks on the grass around itself. The dummy produced the score, and when the blue words appeared mentally face-palmed. 'Ray of the Sun-978'.

The principal walked up to her and asked in a regretful voice, "Where did you learn that spell? That spell is one of the more powerful of the light magics. It takes years just to learn it. I guess I should stop being surprised by this point." Filia looked away not wanting to look him in the eye. "I didn't know that. I just condensed light and aimed them at the dummy." The principal gave a sigh, "Of course you did. The dummy glowed because we anticipated something like this from you. We added a method for it to cool itself. Good thing we added a cloaking spell to this course. Of course no one would believe a five year-old girl did this."

The other three continued their training while Helia took her aside to teach her to control her power output. If she used too much mana she could pass out, adding the belief that women weren't supposed to be able to use magic, especially that of nationally recognized mages. "Now, focus all of the mana in your body and allow it to flow throughout you, just like blood." Helia was one of the very few women mages. She was skilled in healing magic and could control her own mana skillfully. This method was in fact this world's version of meditation. After 15 minutes of meditating Helia said, "OK, now try using the same spell as before, but aim for half of the damage."

Filia walked up to the line and cupped her hands as she did before. Everyone used their own magic to make themselves a small barrier. It wasn't unreasonable for them to do so. She did posses magic akin to nationally recognized mages. The beam of light shot and hit the dummy, but this time the ground wasn't scorched and the dummy didn't glow as brightly. 'Ray of Light-702' (Author: The name is different because it is less powerful). It wasn't half, but at least she didn't seem like a monster with this magic.

The principal who was watching on the sidelines spoke up, "Good work everyone! You all worked up a good sweat. As a reward I have a gift for you all." He pulled a small wooden box from his coat pocket. He walked over to the students and opened the box. Inside were blue translucent circles with gold backing. They looked like sapphires for necklaces. Marc confusedly said "Jewels?"

"Not quite jewels. These are magic devices." Magic devices could preform simple tasks, e.g. starting a fire, making light, etc. "These are some of the newest creations I made. They monitor your health and can even communicate between themselves." It was a smart watch. "It can be added to any kind of holding device. For example you can place it in a necklace and the necklace will combine with the device. They also only activate with your mana. Here, everyone, take one."

The four stared at the jewels. Each jewel started glowing azure blue. They bonded with each person. The inside of the jewels now contained each person's name, health, and mana. "Okay, today's training is over." Everyone left to go to their next class. Filia's next class was history.

She sat down at her seat. The stares she got from the students were less. They had gotten used to a girl being in their class. The teachers didn't react, either, as they had been briefed before school had started. Mr. Hedwig spoke up, "Hello everyone. We previously learned about the Great Demon War. Today you will hear about the four great heroes. They were the Swordsman, Archer, Mage, and Healer. Together they defeated the demons." For the whole period he spoke about the four heroes and their adventures. They disappeared shortly after the war was 'won'. They have been long since been dead. At most a human will live around one century.

As Filia went to bed she only thought of what to do with the jewel. Should she place it in a necklace, a watch, or something else? This could affect how useful it could be.
