Chapter 29: The high before the fall

For exactly forty four seconds I knew true happiness.

The type that makes the heart go haywire. The type of happiness that was free. The type that made me flutter.

Waylen's hand was pulling me to go faster and I pushed myself to go the fastest I have ever been.

I couldn't believe I used to hate running with my former pack in Astoria but now with the little wind behind me and the knowledge that we just shocked two monarchs seemed rather fun.

I could blame Alpha Noah for my hatred of running afterall he was a dick and a dictator who made me run with people with actual wolves.

I thought running would remind me of Owen but it didn't. So weird, right that I haven't thought about Owen in four minutes? Oh scratch that! Fuck, I just did.

Oh well!

I pushed myself to go faster, my laughter echoing throughout the empty hallway. I could see Waylen's smile anytime he turned around to check if I was still with him.

The boy was beautiful!

Soon, we were outside and he was pointing at a white sports car parked by the corner.

"Get in!" Waylen yelled at me.

I went around to the passenger's side with no idea on how to open the car's door.

Who could blame me? The closest to a luxurious car I have seen in my whole life in Astoria was Beta Mateo's sienna.

I stared at the door as I heard Waylen close the door to the driver's side.

"This is a getaway, Wolf girl. And we can't get away if you keep staring at the door!" Waylen's voice contained a hint of amusement.

I searched my head for something remotely believable to say about my current situation but nothing popped up and so I went with the cliche.

"I am a princess. You are supposed to open the door for me as a gentleman"

Great! Now I sound like a dumb bimbo.

I waited to see if Waylen bought my bullshit story about being royalty and after three seconds he dimmed his eyes at me and for a brief fleeting moment I thought he was going to drive off without me.

"You have no idea how to open a sports car, do you Emily Williamson?" He asked me out of nowhere.

Shit! Was I thinking out loud in my mind again?!

"No, Wally…not really" I shook my head as I smiled awkwardly. It was good to tell the truth.

"Don't call me Wally and until you can figure out how to use the door, use the window, princess" He started the car and watched me curiously with a smirk.

Challenge accepted!

I think I am beginning to like Waylen…just a tiny little bit. Not as a future husband or lover but a future partner in crime. The boy had balls for a change unlike the boy who told me he loved me, screwed me and then rejected me.

Waylen was nothing like Owen.

I didn't wait for a second invitation since the window could fit me without a problem.

Soon, we were out of the gate and driving away from the suffocating air of the palace.

My eyes drifted to the screen of his phone to his screensaver, it was a smiling Waylen with a girl that looked awfully a lot like the Queen Consort. I picked up the phone to have a closer look but the car made a screeching sound and stopped.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to pry" I apologized immediately and dropped the phone.

He took the phone from me and returned it to the place I took it from.

"No worries" he replied with a little smile " If my future forced spouse had pointed at his stepmother and yelled 'oh yeah, I banged her…severally actually' I would have snooped too. We will get to Cassie and I soon enough" Waylen pointed to the side of the road and I followed his gaze. "Ice cream?" He asked me.

It made me remember the good old days or bad ones depending on one's opinion when Eloise would yell who wants ice cream after a very bad day with uncle Phil just to cheer me up.

I turned to Waylen and I smiled. It was laced in mischief.

"You have to say it" I said in a singing voice.

"Say what?" He was puzzled.

"You have to say who wants ice cream…it's a rule" I told him.

Waylen chuckled like he couldn't figure me out. "Who wants ice cream?"

"Emily does!" I yelled and started laughing like a lunatic. I was having fun and I intend to keep on having fun.

"You are weirdo, Emily Williamson" Waylen said and stepped out of the car.

His voice wasn't harsh or mocking, if anything it was intrigued.

Getting out of a sports car was relatively easier than getting in and it was a good thing since Waylen made no attempt to open the car door for me. I left the car door open and leaned on the car as he entered the local ice cream place and came out later holding two bags.

"Now, about that favor I owe you?" Waylen asked as he came closer to me and handed one to me.

My heart skipped a beat. How do one causally bring up an abortion clinic to a future imposed husband?

Author's note

Any suggestions for Emily???
