Chapter 56
My mom called a few days before Christmas to see how I was doing and to ask if I was going to join them. My question was very simple.
“Are you and Dad going to accept me being gay?”
“Well, honey, you just need to give us time. But I know we’d both love to see you on Christmas.”
So, I went. For a few hours. Dad wouldn’t even look at me. And when he spoke, it was to Mom only. They got me a new composition book to write song lyrics in. That was really nice. I got them gift cards to restaurants I knew they would like.
We had lunch. Mom made macaroni and cheese because she knew how much I liked it. We had that with green beans and ham. It was like an early dinner. I suspected she wanted to have a nice meal with me. But it was definitely the quietest meal I’d ever had with them. Mom tried to force conversation and Dad and I only replied in short answers.
