Chapter 40

“I’m sure you can help, but I think I might ask Levi. And I might even ask him to sing lead vocals on it.”

I deflated. “That’s…that’d be cool. I wonder how he’d feel about that.”

“It’s nothing against you.”

“Uh-huh.”

He met my eyes again. “It really isn’t. I mean, I just wouldn’t feel right with you singing on them.”

I frowned. “Why?”

“Because of what they’re about. Or, who, I guess.”

“Are they…about me?”

He let out a big breath and clapped his hands together. “You know what? Yeah, they are. Songwriting is cathartic for me, and I think they’re good, so—”

“That’s good. I’m happy for you. I mean, I’ve been writing a little, too. It’s obviously not the same as writing with you, but there might be some good pieces to salvage. I…I’d let you look at them.”

He shook his head. “Does this feel very Fleetwood Mac to you?”

I laughed, and he did too. It was a nice moment, until the movers ruined it.

“We’re all done here, Mr. Martens.”
