5 Chapter 5: Coincidence

It was quite a fun exchange I have to say and the girl looked pretty pretty so I was happy for my new friend, I looked at my hand and saw the Great Ball while thinking about all the kinds of Pokemon I could use it in, I said to myself:- this Great Ball has to be special, I'll use it on my first catch, so I'll wait for the moment until a Pokémon that I consider special appears."

And as if it were the signal for him to make his debut, I heard a loud "Pid!" - only to turn around and see on the roof of the business in front of the Pokemart a small Pidgey with a brown spot on his beak.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- So you came back, huh? - I said in a funny tone as the little Pidgey flew from the roof to my shoulder and then nibbled on my ear playfully: - hahaha hey buddy please don't eat me. - I said while laughing at the antics of little Pidgey who seemed quite entertained bothering me.

-I don't really believe in fate Pidgey, but I think it's no coincidence that I find you right after I get this. - I said as I showed little Pidgey the Great Ball that had just been given to me, - What do you say little friend? Don't you want to go on a journey with the next Champion of the region?" Pidgey didn't seem to quite understand what the Great Ball was, but he seemed quite pleased because he sensed that I wanted to be his friend.

His answer to my question was to flap his wings and fly around me with a low flight and then give me a little push that knocks me to the ground. -Wow! For being so small you really are very strong! - I exclaimed, realizing that I was underestimating the Pidgey because of its size, forgetting that it was a Pokemon in its own right.

Getting up with a jump I gave a push to the little Pidgey who stopped for a moment worried to see if I was okay and I started to run while laughing at the dumbfounded face of my new friend, the Pidgey came out of his confusion and instinctively understanding the game immediately took flight and caught up with me in a matter of seconds to throw me back to the ground with a very slight Tackle.

Yes, it's true, mentally I'm an adult and I don't think it's very well seen to play tag with a bird, but come on! It's a Pokémon! This Pidgey is basically the Pokémon that opened my eyes to this world, the first Pokémon I could touch and the first Pokémon to be my friend, if it is frowned upon to want to please him more by playing with him then it is not relevant to me, besides it is practically a baby, it is important that before capturing it I can trust me and develop well.

So after that little justification on my part I spent a couple more hours playing with the Pidgey, which surprised me quite a bit since I basically spent it running for hours and still didn't feel completely tired, I think bodies in this world are stronger than in my previous world because this amount of exercise would have left me on the floor after a short time still in my best physical condition as an adult.

I think under normal circumstances we could keep playing for a few more hours, but we stopped abruptly when we heard a roar coming from the south of where we were, quite curious, I told Pidgey. -Hey, I think it could be a battle, do you want to keep an eye on it? -. The little Pidgey, not understanding everything that was going on, flew to my shoulder before I started running to find out that I was making all that fuss.

Located a few streets to the south, very close to the entrance of Pewter City you could see a park with a combat arena in relatively good condition, around it you could see several trainers talking to each other and looking at the center of the arena I could see a Nidorino and a Gengar engaging in battle.

A few feet behind the Nidorino, on the left side of the arena, was a trainer in a blue jacket who shouted instructions to his Pokémon: - Quick Nidorino, jump and use Peck on Gengar! - The Nidorino, without stopping to think about the order, took a long leap and lunged straight to where the Gengar was, its horn illuminating with a white light.

- How is that supposed to be a Peck? - I said amused by my witticism as I approached the other trainers watching the particularly familiar Pokemon matchup with Pidgey on my shoulder.

One of the trainers watching the game turned at me out of the corner of his eye at my comment and commented dismissively, "Look, rookie, I think you'd better not think about continuing to be a Pokémon Trainer if you don't even know how the Energy Type works and how to take advantage of it to win a fight." – the Trainer explained only to then ignore me again and shout to his partner next to him: - I'll bet $1,000 Pokedolars on that Nidorino-.

Somewhat angered by the rude Trainer's comment, I quickly rebutted: "I may not know much about Energy Type, but at least I'm not the idiot who bets on the Nidorino fighting a Ghost Pokemon that is practically invulnerable to physical attacks and fully evolved."

The Trainer, far from getting angry, smiled at me with amusement and said: Who says they are invulnerable? It's one thing to be immune to attacks with Energy Type Normal, it's another thing to be immune to physical attacks. - he commented only to then laugh after seeing how the Nidorino hit poor Gengar in the stomach who could not react in time and who barely levitated with a pained expression.

Quite surprised by what I had just seen, my mind began to draw its own conclusions, I assumed without thinking that because it was basically a shadow Nidorino's attack would simply pierce Gengar without damaging him, apparently the Energy Type is a factor that I will have to take into account if I really aspire to be a Champion in this world and thinking everything with the logic of my old world will hurt me.

-And one more thing. – Added the Trainer who apparently was not satisfied with the lesson he had just given me -Evolution is not decisive in a fight, the level and attacks are very important of course, but at least most of the battle is decided by the choices that the Trainer makes, it is not for nothing that we are crucial for the Pokemon to become truly powerful and if you don't believe me you better lend Pay attention to what's happening in front of you.

While analyzing what the cantankerous Trainer had just told me I couldn't help but look up and continue watching the battle, the Gengar that apparently belongs to the yellow jacket Trainer located on the right side of the sand was already quite hurt by his rival's Peck, you could see at a glance that it wouldn't take much for the Nidorino to win the match.

The Red Trainer didn't miss the opportunity to shout out to his Pokémon: Nidorino! You're about to win, use Mud-Slap!" the Nidorino somehow stuck his claw into the combat arena and lifted it with a strong blow raising some dirt that was heading straight for his opponent, who only rose from the ground and taunted his opponent by sticking out his tongue and laughing in an annoyed way, The Red Trainer saw that and clicked his tongue and ordered: Nidorino jumps again and ends the fight with Peck!.

As the Nidorino prepared to jump, the Yellow Trainer reacted quickly and seeing that the sun was at the right point, pointing directly to the left side of the arena, he quickly ordered his Pokémon: Gengar! Take advantage and enter its shadow!

The Gengar, responding to his trainer's commands and smiling happily in a somewhat tired manner, took advantage of his rival's leap to turn into something resembling a liquid shadow and blend in with the shadow generated by Nidorino.

The Red Trainer saw this with a smile and waited for Gengar to fully enter the shadow of his Pokemon before shouting effusively, "Now Nidorino, use Mud-Slap in your shadow!" - Nidorino's claw glowed a faint brown before inserting itself into its own shadow and lifting the dirt there.

Next to the dirt came the already fainting Gengar who was only lying in the sand for a few seconds before his trainer picked up a Pokeball and returned driven by a red lightning.

The arena erupted in cheers as soon as the fight ended, it was surprising the noise people can make after a show like that, the Red Trainer just raised his fist high and the screams intensified.

Shortly after the cheers of the trainers had calmed down, the now tired Nidorino approached his trainer and very carefully pushed him slightly with his head, signaling that he wanted to rest, the Red Trainer woke up and with an apologetic smile he took out a Great Ball from his belt and called his partner back.

The Red Trainer approached the now sulking Yellow Trainer only to take out his Trainer's License and placing it face down waiting for his win, the Yellow Trainer with some regret took out his own license and placed it slightly above his opponent's until a sound was heard -beep - that reminded me of notifications from a banking app.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was only after witnessing the now happy "Curmudgeon Trainer" cash in his $1,000 Pokedolars from his partner that I was able to walk away from the arena with Pidgey on my shoulder and jumping slightly from the excitement of the match he witnessed.

-Calm down, my friend, I'm impressed by the fight too. - I said to Pidgey while in my mind I was slowly digesting what I had just witnessed- I think there is a lot to work on in the future, but for the moment I think we need to start with this. - I said as I pulled out the Great Ball again and showed it to Pidgey.

I put on the most serious face I could and said: - I think it's time, it's your decision Pidgey, you've seen how Pokémon battles work, I know that at this moment we are both beginners, but I can promise you that soon we will be the ones who are winning in that arena. -

Pidgey's eyes sparkled with excitement at my words and for a moment I watched as he approached the Great Ball in my hand only to be interrupted by the already annoying rumble of my stomach.

With the tension of the situation now dead I could only laugh before saying, - I'm sorry little friend, but after all that play and the excitement of the battle, now I can only think about eating. - the now funny Pidgey smiled somehow with his beak and seemed to remember something before he flew slightly and pulled my shirt with his beak signaling me to follow him.

Pidgey rose in a light flight and headed a little farther south, straight to the city gate, trotting behind him I stopped at the door remembering Clarisse's warnings before shouting, "Wait Pidgey, I can't get out of town yet!" -.

The bird Pokémon only looked confused for a few seconds before smiling at me and pulling me back with its beak, which I interpreted as a sign that the place it wanted to take me to shouldn't be too far, so running behind Pidgey we positioned ourselves about 20 minutes from the city gate before finding a huge meadow that lay between Pewter City and Viridian Forest.

In the middle of the meadow there was a small agglomeration of bushes slightly shorter than me, among which I could see some small blue fruits that caught my attention.

Looking more closely I was able to identify the small blue fruits as the famous Oran Berrys. As I understand it, these small Berrys are sold at a good price in health food stores in the city, even reaching $20 Pokedolars per piece and are an excellent source of nutrients. For Pokemon, in turn when ground and combined with other medical components they can become an excellent ointment that quickly heals minor wounds in both Pokemon and humans.

So happy with this discovery, I could only jump for joy and shouted to Pidgey: - well done friend! -With these Oran Berrys and studying some first aid I can secure a few minor medications in case something happens to me or my team on the trip or even if the need arises I can sell some whens and get some funds for emergencies!-

It didn't take long for the laughter to turn into a grimace of surprise when a wild Ekans sprang out of the bushes in such a swift movement that neither Pidgey nor I could react and swallowed my new friend in one bite.

It's funny how in a single day, Pidgey, the most common Pokemon in the franchise, the one we all defeated when we started our adventure, was the Pokemon to open my eyes twice to this new reality.
