After giving the Pokémon a cursory examination, Misty cocked her head to the side and shrugged her shoulders before continuing. She stated that "Fire-types really aren't my speciality," and I believed her. She hazarded a guess and said, "Perhaps two or three."

"About what I was thinking," said Ash. "Thanks for clarifying." "You know," he chuckled under his grin, fighting the urge to laugh at his own joke. "The majority of healthy and well-trained Growlithe will evolve at some point sometime between the ages of three and five years old,"

Misty let out a sigh. She remarked that it would be pretty incredible if it happened. "From what I've heard, Arcanine are a very powerful type of Pokémon..." Now it was her turn to crack a grin. "I've heard that they can be a little too fierce for some trainers. Are you absolutely certain that you can handle one?"

Ash jumped to his feet and exclaimed, "Of course," as he did so. If I've done a good job training Growlithe, the evolved form of the Pokémon he is now should be identical to the one he is right now.

Misty remarked that it was unfortunate that they did not have access to an Arcanine at the time.

Ash scratched Pikachu's head while asking his question so as not to make his companion feel like he was ignoring them both. "Why is that?"

Misty swallowed hard before gesturing in the direction of the north. Because we are about to enter Viridian Forest, she explained. "Because we are." "And despite the fact that I know very little about fire-type Pokémon, I wish that we had a few powerful ones going in there with us."

When Ash responded to her gesture, he found himself a little taken aback by the situation. He had been focusing his attention on Misty and on the path that was directly in front of their group, and he had largely ignored anything that was further away than a good stone's throw. Therefore, the outline of the forest that was rising up from the sea of gold had surprised him when it appeared before him. The Viridian Forest was less than a kilometre away and getting closer.

"Wow," Ash mumbled to himself. "When viewed from a greater distance, it appears to be darker than I recalled."

Misty informed her friend that "It's probably not any safer than you remember either." We can't exactly say that Professor Oak is here with us right now.

"Well," said Ash as he reached behind his back and removed a pokeball from its holster on his belt. "I guess this is it." "Well, I suppose now is as good a time as any other," she said.

Misty questioned her friend, "What are you going to do?"

As Ash smiled and tossed the pokeball into the air, he asked, "Would you mind sending out Blastoise?" Blastoise was Ash's starter Pokémon. "For dramatic effect, he'd be a good choice."

Misty nodded and quickly removed Blastoise from its pokeball at the same time that Ash's pokeball burst open and cast a bright white light on the ground below it. Fearow materialised out of the light with a squawking caw and spread its wings wide, revealing an astounding wing span that measured an entire twenty-five feet.

Fearow continued to stretch while keeping its eyes closed. It started by extending its right wing and right leg to their furthest possible extents, and then it shifted its weight and stretched the opposite side of its body. It was completely unaware of the shapes that were surrounding it. When the bird finally opened its eyes, it jerked in surprise and jumped backwards. It then immediately fixed its eyes on Ash and gave a wary glance to the glowing yellow rodent that was perched on top of the trainer's head.

"Pikachu," Ash uttered as he stood at ease, exuding nothing but self-assurance in his voice. "Do not hesitate to bring her down if she makes an attempt to flee."

Pikachu chittered its approval in response to the statement. Even though he hadn't understood Ash's command word for word, he did understand the general idea behind it, as could be expected of any Pokémon. It was clear that Fearow had an understanding of the situation's overarching principle as well. At this point, the bird was aware that it was completely encircled by Ash and Pikachu, Growlithe, and Blastoise, along with Misty and Blastoise. It would not let itself relax, but it did fold its wings because it did not want to start a fight that it would inevitably lose.

"Well, you're smart enough to understand that we're not here to fight," said Ash, as much to himself as Fearow, wondering how best to display dominance over a bird, especially one as large as Fearow. "Well, you're smart enough to understand that we're not here to fight," said Ash. He took a step closer, but stopped when Fearow shut her drill-like beak and hissed once at him through tightened nares. He said, "Now you just need to understand that I'm in charge from here on in."

Misty whispered something to get Ash's attention and then announced, "It's a female." "A lot of male flying-types will show superiority to a flock of females or younger males by plucking out a few feathers on the subordinate's neck. I know that this is how some trainers show that they are in charge." "A lot of male flying-types will show superiority to a flock of females or younger males."

When Ash saw the narrowed gaze that Fearow was giving him, he gave a single swallow before pushing any thoughts of anxiety to the recesses of his mind. "Pikachu," he muttered. This Pokémon could—he cut the thought short and stepped forward without pausing and reached out before Fearow could react. "Be extremely, extremely ready." He grabbed them quickly and pulled with a swift tug as if he were reaching out to shake the hand of a good friend. He plucked two feathers from the side of Fearow's neck.

Fearow let out a single peep of shock and took a clumsy step in the opposite direction. It appeared as though the large bird was going to thrust its beak forward, but a bright warning spark from Pikachu's cheeks stopped it in its tracks. Instead of moving, Fearow chose to remain still and watch carefully as Ash took the first step forward. As the trainer reached out once more and touched the bird on the neck, the large bird twitched slightly. This time, however, Ash ran his fingers over the thinning patch of feathers from which he had previously plucked his trophies. Fearow was not in the least bit put at ease by the gesture; however, he refrained from engaging in combat.

Misty watched as Ash focused all of his attention on the Pokémon, and her expression clearly conveyed her surprise. The hands of the trainer with the red head were balled up into pale, icy fists, and her voice was on the verge of barking orders for Blastoise to attack. Misty was worried, and she could feel sweat forming on both her palms and her forehead. She thought that the Pokémon ought to have gouged out Ash's eyes. What was I thinking when I mentioned that he could pluck a feather? Even seasoned bird trainers are hesitant to do that. What was I thinking?

Misty was powerless to stop Fearow from allowing Ash to pet the side of its neck while it remained tense but appeared more wary than terrified (or, as she noted, furious). All she could do was watch. She had the impression that this was not normal behaviour. Taming Growlithe in such a short amount of time was a challenge in itself. However, Growlithe was hurt, she was by herself, and she was not as strong as this Fearow. Growlithe had the opportunity to become more attached to Ash while it was suffering from its wounds in the wild. Her gaze shifted to Ash, who was now giggling to himself and openly picking at the feathers of the bird with both of his hands. What is his secret to success here?

Ash took a few steps back and crossed his arms before saying, "Alright." After turning to face Misty, he gestured in the direction of the nearby forest. "I remember bugs being the greatest treat for travellers in Viridian Forest," he said. "It's been a long time since I've been there." He made a gesture towards Fearow and said, "And now we have the perfect counter to them."
