chapter: 9 recovery

The bad feeling from losing was still in my mind as I stood in the battle area. But I didn't let it make me feel bad for too long. The battle had taught me important things about how to plan better.

I felt more determined now to face whatever challenges were coming. I won the next two battles and that made me feel better. But then I lost the next one. It showed me that being a good Pokémon Trainer isn't always easy. There are times when you win and times when you lose.

When it was time for lunch, I went to the gym's canteen. Lots of other Trainers were there too, talking about their battles. I got in line to get some food.

Brawly, Future the gym leader, was also there in front of me. The food they were serving today was rice pancakes with yellow curry and pickles. The smell of it was really good and made me hungry.

When I glanced over at Brawly, I couldn't help but notice that his plate was piled high with food. It was kind of amusing to see so much food on his plate, and it brought a little smile to my face. I thought about the possibility of sitting with him at his table while I enjoyed my meal.

After I got my own plate of food, I mustered the courage to approach Brawly's table. I asked him if it was okay for me to join him, and he responded with a friendly smile and a nod. As I settled in, I couldn't help but notice the generous portions of rice pancakes and curry on his plate.

While we both dug into our meals, we engaged in conversation about battles, strategies, and how to improve as Trainers. I found myself curious about Brawly's own experiences and progress throughout the day.

"Hey, Brawly, how's your day been going?" I inquired, genuinely interested in his response.

Brawly looked thoughtful for a moment before responding, "Honestly, not so great. The waves were tough to ride today. I managed to win one battle, but I lost four others." His tone was a mix of determination and a hint of disappointment.

Hearing about his struggles actually made me feel a little better about my own performance. Here was a gym leader, someone with much more experience than me, who was also facing challenges and setbacks. Reflecting on my own record of 2 wins out of 4 battles, I realized that we were both navigating the unpredictable currents of the gym battles. I need to improve.

As our conversation continued, We were both on a journey of improvement, constantly learning from our victories and defeats alike. It was reassuring to know that even experienced Trainers faced tough days, and it motivated me to keep pushing forward, striving to become a better Trainer.

I felt a renewed sense of purpose. The battles ahead might be tough, but I was determined to learn from each experience and become a stronger Trainer. The journey was about more than just winning; it was about pushing myself, embracing challenges, and evolving as both a Trainer and a person.

As I finished my meal, I looked around the canteen and noticed Julian sitting at a nearby table. His casual demeanor and easy smile were a stark contrast to my own intensity. It was a reminder that battles meant different things to different people. Julian's approach was rooted in strategy and adaptation, whereas my focus was on the bond between Trainer and Pokémon and brute force my self through.

After wrapping up my gym shift, I headed to the lounge where a bunch of other trainers were hanging out. We chatted about our battles and strategies while waiting for our turn to meet Argen, the gym leader. He wanted to have one-on-one talks with each of us in his office to give feedback on our battles and help us get better.

When it was finally my turn, I stepped into Argen's office and took a seat. He looked a bit grumpy, like he had a bad morning or something. Still, he nodded at me and started talking about my battles.

"Alright, Rex. I've seen your battles today. Some good moves in there," Argen grumbled.

"Thanks, Argen. I tried to give it my best shot," I replied.

He scratched his head and continued, "Yeah, well, your strategy could use some sharpening. You've got potential, but you need to work on reading your opponent better."

"I see what you mean. I'll try to work on that," I said, trying to be respectful.

Argen gave a little grunt and said, "Yeah, you better. And don't forget to mix up your Pokémon's moves. Predictability won't get you far."

"Got it. I'll keep that in mind," I responded, making a mental note.

Despite his grumpy demeanor, I could tell that Argen was actually trying to help. He might not be all smiles, but he had experience to share.

"Listen, after a tough battle, take some time to reflect. That's how you learn and grow," Argen muttered, almost like he was talking to himself.

"I'll definitely do that. Thanks for the advice," I said, appreciating his effort.

Leaving his office, I felt a mix of motivation and relief. Back in the lounge, I chatted with some fellow trainers about what Argen had told me.
