24 Why are you whispering

Alita's gaze followed him as he turned away from her and strode into a different room. Her eyes quickly took in her surroundings. The vast and luxurious living room made her temporarily forget her current confusion.

With a long jacket in hand, Axel returned to the sitting room. He marched toward her and made to put the jacket on her, but she stepped back. He frowned, raising one of his brows in question.

"I... Umm... I can do it myself." She stuttered, lowering her eyes and biting down on her lower lip. Axel stared at her for a bit, then handed the jacket to her. She muttered a 'thank you', then turned her back at him to put the jacket on.

"Please sit." He offered and he plopped himself down on the plush sofa after she had taken her seat. As much as he was boiling inside, he tried not to let it slip out.

"Why were there vampires at my place?" Alita threw the question again. She was still trying to wrap her head around everything that just happened and nothing made sense to her. She had tried her best to stay away from them and the ones she killed, she tried her best to do it where no one would know of what happened. So she could not come up with any reason why vampires would visit her apart from Axel.

"I'm not sure... But I can say that they did not come to wish you a good life." His voice came out strained, Alita knew instantly that he was angry. His scrutinizing gaze on her told her that something was wrong somewhere, but she chose to ignore it as she had other things to worry about.

Sighing out loud, she covered her forehead with her palm and shut her eyes. "I can't believe I have to move again. I'm in my final year for heaven's sake." She cried out in frustration. If she moves now, she may not be able to complete college. Why won't these creatures leave her to leave her life in peace? "This is going to be hard." Her voice turned down into a whisper.

"You don't need to move, Alita. Let's just wait for Asher to return so we can find out why they were at your house, then let me handle the rest. Okay?" Axel assured, but Alita just stared at him as if he didn't know what he was saying.

Realizing that she didn't believe what he just said, he shifted forward on his seat so he was sitting at the edge and he took her hands in his. "I'm serious, Alita. Relax and let me handle it." His eyes looked intently into hers as he spoke and she nodded. More from feeling quite uncomfortable with the way he was looking at her and the way he held her hand than from agreeing to what he said. She subtly pulled her hands away from his grasp and her eyes looked around for what to rest on, instead of his face.

"Okay." She whispered, after nodding her head. She sighed internally, hoping she was not making a mistake by trusting her enemy. Yes, he had helped her, but what if he was doing it to gain her trust before he will strike? What if...? She shook her head, trying to dissipate the thoughts as her eyes traveled back to him. Her life had become complicated and she didn't know who to trust anymore. And here, this prince was asking her to trust him. There was sincerity in his eyes, and something else urging her to forget all her worries and believe in him, but an iota of doubt lingered in her mind, possibly because he was one of the creatures she was not supposed to put her trust in.

"Are you okay?" Axel asked when he saw her expression quickly switching into different ones. Though it was subtle, he could still see that she was worried about something and that she doesn't fully believe him. He didn't care though. Whether she believed it or not, he was going to do everything in his power to keep her safe.

"I'm fine." She nodded again. "How did you know about the vampires at my house? I thought you were at Havilla." She queried, waiting expectantly for his answer. One minute he was miles away from her and the next, he had come to whisk her away before the intruders could get to her. She found it hard to understand how that happened.

"I had one of my men watch over you while I was away. He called me a few minutes ago to inform me. I guess I suspected this could happen and I'm glad I asked him to..." He trailed off when he saw her eyes stretching wide. "What?" He asked, slightly angling his head to the side.

"You had someone spying on me?" She whispered with knitted brows and Axel tilted his head further. His brows furrowed as he wondered why she had to whisper.

"Why are you whispering?" His question made Alita realize that she had actually whispered. The confusing part is that she didn't even know why she did. Nibbling on her inner cheek, she blinked severally.

"I don't know. I guess the word 'Spy' made me do that." She spoke softly but audibly this time.

"Not spying. Watching." He corrected. "Is that a problem?" He inquired, gauging her reactions to know what she was thinking.

"It's... It's just strange and super weird to have someone follow and watch you without your notice. How come I've never seen him?" She inquired, now curious.

"He's one of my best spies and he's good at what he does. You won't see him unless he wants you to."

Her mouth formed an 'O' shape in understanding. Almost immediately, "Wait! He can also disappear?"

"Huh? No... Of course not. The only vampires I know with that ability are myself and Asher. If there are any other, I haven't met them yet." Axel explained, quite amused at the way her expressions switched while she was throwing her questions and while he answered.

"Oh... Okay."

When she opened her mouth to ask the next question that popped into her head, the door flew open and Asher walked in with another brown-haired vampire. Both of them had streaks of blood stains on their clothes and hands.
