“Nothing. Everything’s fine.”
Chris ran through a million reasons why Gabe would be so tense, but none of them made much sense. “Do you want to go get Toffee and Caramel?” It was Toffee and Caramel, right?Suddenly he was uncertain. Fudge? No, not fudge. It had to be Toffee.
“Oh…erm…yeah.”
It did nothing to let up on the toe clenching, though. “We can go now.”
“You want to…erm…you want me to bring them here?”
Was he having second thoughts? Chris understood—he would have to understand—if Gabe wanted to leave. He had to think about his safety, and that pushy man yesterday did have a point.
If he stayed, there would be no protecting him if the assassins figured out he was still here. Chris still believed it was the best plan. He wished the witness protection programme would still help Gabe out—he believed they would, even if he stayed here. The man had just tried to bully Gabe into doing what he thought was best.
