Chapter 7

'What a haul~!'

In my hands was a full bag of snacks from the betting. It was not that hard to win since I have some experience when it comes to gauging other people's strength. I've encountered many powerful monsters, so I learned from experience how to gauge their power. For me, it was an easy win.

Soon night came to the camp, and a strong rain was pouring down on us, but strangely, I felt something weird within the sky each time thunder cackled. As always, it was natural for me to experience this. I have quickly come to terms with it. While kids my age may be afraid of lightning and thunder, for me, I find solace in them instead of fear.

It was the middle of the night when suddenly I woke up from my sleep, feeling something eerily familiar.

'Monster…'

I know this feeling; a deep sense of disgust and annoyance crept up to me. A monster is nearby.

Then I stood up from my bunk bed without waking any of the Hermes Cabin Campers and headed out. I followed my instinct and ran out of the cabin, soon finding myself at the entrance of the little farmhouse that brought me to this place.

What I didn't expect, however, was to find Chiron and Annabeth waiting at the entrance of the little farmhouse. My hurried footsteps seemed to announce my presence.

"Marcus?" asked Annabeth, surprised.

"What are you doing here?"

"I smell a monster nearby," I answered.

Chiron and Annabeth both looked at me with surprise when they heard my words.

'It's nearby,' then my gaze fell on the door.

"It's outside, isn't it?" I asked them, but they didn't answer. My natural instinct to hunt the monster urged me to go outside and slay it.

I have come to terms with my fate that as long as there is a monster nearby, then I will not let it live and breathe the same air as mine. It has become a kind of doctrine of mine. And so, I walked closer to the door and attempted to leave, but Chiron stopped me in my tracks.

"Mr. Phase, please return to your cabin," Chiron stopped me.

"Out of the way," I said to him, glaring at him, but he refuted my warning and said.

"I'm afraid you are not allowed to leave this camp. Only campers under quest or special circumstances can leave the camp, and I'm afraid you are neither of both."

"But a monster is outside! I can feel it!"

"I know, Mr. Phase, but you shouldn't fight it. We must let fate take its course to fulfill something much more important."

'The prophecy, to be exact.' Chiron thought, but he didn't say it aloud. Annabeth, on the other hand, was quite confused by our interaction. She was only informed by Chiron that they would fetch a new camper, but she didn't expect this.

"What nonsense are you old horse talking about?" My mouth is usually very unrestrained, so I unconsciously blurted out.

"Get out of my way. This will be the last time I will warn you." I walked past him, but he tried to stop me, so I grabbed his hand that was about to grab me and kicked his horse body. With my kick, he skidded across the floor.

Both Annabeth and Chiron were taken by surprise by my sudden action, but I didn't care about them and just walked out of the door. I ran and relied on my instinct to locate where the presence of the monster was coming from, and immediately after a few dashes and maneuvers here and there, I finally located it. But it seems that I was too late.

I saw a giant monster that I have brawled with more than countless times, with a humanoid body but a bullhead. The Minotaur stood tall, holding a frail woman within its barbaric paw.

"MOOOM!!" I heard a scream from a young man who was just a few meters away from the bull-headed monster. Then, as if the woman had evaporated, she turned into disintegrating light particles.

"NOOOO!!"

'Fuck, I was too late!!'

I cursed inside my mind. My initial goal coming here was to slay the monster, so I didn't expect this kid and his mother's situation. But if I had come here a bit earlier, then probably I could've saved the kid's mother.

The black-haired kid roared in anger and rushed forward the Minotaur with renewed strength powered by pure anger. I saw him dash at the hulking figure of the bull-headed monster without fear.

After that, I saw how the black-haired kid brawled with the Minotaur with hatred, and after a few clashes, he eventually slew the Minotaur using its own horn against it. I decided not to interfere since this was his fight and his revenge, so I didn't do anything, even though my purpose of coming here was to kill the monster.

The kid lay on the ground crying from the loss of his mother, but he didn't stop. Even though he felt weak, he still stood up from the muddy ground and dragged his useless goat friend, who was just sleeping on the ground while yelling for food when he was fighting for his life.

Seeing the state he was in, I took pity on them and decided to help them.

"Here, let me help you," he was startled by me, who from his perspective appeared out of nowhere, but his fatigue overcame him, and he fell again, but not before I caught him. Before returning back, I grabbed the Minotaur horn that the black-haired kid used to slay the bull and put it in his pocket.

'That was a brave and nice fight.'

I brought the two to the porch of the farmhouse and knocked.

"He's here, he's the one," Annabeth said, looking at the black-haired kid.

"Silence, Annabeth. Bring him inside," Chiron said, and I handed over the kid on my arm to her, but as for the goat kid? I threw him on the ground, roughly slamming him to the porch.

"What was that for?" Annabeth screamed at me.

"I just felt like throwing him to the ground," I replied, and she gave me a deep glare, but Chiron glanced at her and asked her to bring the kid inside, so she didn't get to argue with me.

"As for you, Mr. Phase, we'll need to have a discussion about this, but I'll put it on a later date since I have something important," Chiron said to me.

"And can you please bring Grover inside?" he asked, but I refused.

"Sorry, but I don't touch useless. You bring him inside yourself." I didn't bother talking to him any further and just headed inside instead. Something from this Grover guy just ticked me off. He just felt like, I don't know... baggage?
