Chapter Thirty-Eight

It was the day after Wen Yuan's birthday but the day before they left. Everyone was taking a day of rest before being on the road again to travel home. Though everyone who came to celebrate his son, he was eternally grateful to, the one person he was expecting to see was Meng Yao but Sect. Leader Wen Qing seemed to grow angry every time Wei Wuxian brought him up to ask where he was.

Later she took him off to the side and said, "I banished him from Qishan Wen a few months ago. He killed my general all because he was being bullied, even when I asked my other disciples they all claimed that all of them even when Wang kept their distance from him and never gave Meng Yao much attention. No one knows the real reason why he killed Wen Wang."

Shocked to hear this news Wei Wuxian didn't know what to say about it. So instead he just spent the rest of his time in Nightless City with Lan Wangji and Wen Yuan. They were in the gardens, and Lan Wangji was playing with A-Yuan, with the new toys he received from his birthday. Wei Wuxian was under a tree sitting on the grass watching them but his mind seemed to be elsewhere. Learning what Meng Yao has done left something bitter in his mouth.

Lan Wangji seemed to notice that Wei Wuxian was elsewhere and came to his side to sit on the grass beside him. Taking his hand in his Lan Wangji said nothing until Wei Wuxian was ready to share. Wei Wuxian smiles up at him and kisses him on the cheek, before saying, "I am alright Lan Zhan, just distracted I guess"

"Meng Yao?" Lan Wangji asks.

"Yes, I just can't believe he would do such a thing. There must have been a reason for it." Wei Wuxian claims, "I can't believe it until he tells me himself I guess."

"Might not come."

Wei Wuxian sights knowing he was right, Meng Yao might never tell Wei Wuxian the reasons which only means he can only take the word of someone else and with the evidence stacked up against Meng Yao there isn't much Wei Wuxian could do.

Night came and went and Wei Wuxian was forced once again to part with Lan Wangji, but they didn't split apart without spending a night together, while leaving Wen Yuan with Jiang Yanli and baby, A-Ling. Though when the morning came they were still tangled in one another's arms not wanting to greet the new day, but a knock came on their door, it was a Lan Discipline letting Lan Wangji know it was about time to depart to Cloud Recesses.

Both being packed, they went to breakfast with the others. Lan Wangji went to sit with his brother and Wei Wuxian went to sit by Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli, who passed over Wei Wuxian's three-year-old son. After all, it was served and fed, it was time to be saying goodbye. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian were goofing off for a moment before Jiang Yanli broke them apart so she could give a kiss on Wen Yuan's little head and drag her brother away saying it was time to go.

Sect. Leader Jin Zixuan bows to Wei Wuxian and smiles to Wen Yuan before running to his wife's side and takes their sons in his arms before making their way out of the city. Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang came to bid Wei Wuxian farewell, well not before Nie Huaisang could dote on his favorite "Nephew" for a bit longer, playing with Wen Yuan and giving him a few last presents. His Excellency bows to Wei Wuxian and Wei Wuxian returns it saying goodbye to the Nie brothers and they take off their swords.

Lan Xichen with all the Lan disciples were last to say their goodbyes to Wei Wuxian who all bowed to him before they took off to the skies all the same but it was Lan Wangji who was last, he gathered Wei Wuxian in his arms and shared a kiss with Wei Wuxian before they parted, and Lan Wangji kisses his son on his head before following after his brother.

Wei Wuxian and all the Wen residents stayed for a few more days in nightless cities before they got on the road. Making it safely to the Yiling Patriarch mountain, Wei Wuxian and Wen Yuan stayed there in the cave that the Wen's turned into a second home for the Yiling Patriarch and his son for when he comes to visit every other week or so.

By the end of the week, Wei Wuxian and Wen Yuan finally found themselves back to the cottage. When Yuan was asleep in Wei Wuxian's arms after all the traveling, he was completely exhausted. Wei Wuxian carries him inside and places Wen Yuan in his room in his little bed before covering him with his blanket. After making sure his son is comfortable, Wei Wuxian cleaned the cottage and attended the garden before making dinner and having it ready for when Wen Yuan was ready to awake again.
